Pretty good essay all around. My one thought though, while the author is trying to make a point with comparing the Japanese originals and western adaptations with music, is a good comparison and I know why he does it, it's good to keep in mind that music often plays a very effective role in relaying information as well. It too can not only build atmosphere, but build emotion and influence audience expectations. I'm not disagreeing with the author here, just pointing out that the use of music in film in and of itself isn't indicative of poor craft.
