She's been due for about 5-10 years, but kept losing out to the Ligo team, dark Matter, Cern, etc. There has been a long run of groundbreaking science that has pushed her to the background, now its her time to shine. Her work has been critical in using optics in research. When optical computers are finally ready for the mainstream, it is her work that paved the way.

The shock to me was that Dr Ashkin is being recognized. His work is used in biomedical settings as a way to sue light to suspend viruses and bacteria. I figured he'd die before betting the big "attaboy."
