I ran BeOS back when it was a thing and I loved it. I don't think a desktop OS without graphics hardware vendor support is ever going to find its niche now, since from an end user's perspective everything it's good at your phone is good at too. You've got to admire their dedication though.

The groundwork is kinda there. Haiku's strategy for troublesome drivers has been to lift them from FreeBSD. IDK if it works at the moment, since last I checked FreeBSD 11 doesn't support my cheapo integrated AMD chip.

My worry is more the resource dump that is modern web browsers.

Thanks to the generous support of donors, Haiku, Inc. was able to employ a developer to work full-time on enhancing WebKit port and areas of the system relevant to it (which turned out to be nearly everything) for over a year.

That year was 2014.

There's a certain quixotic zeal that... yeah, "admire" is close to the right sentiment.

I dunno, though. I now run in this circle and those people spend tens of thousands of dollars making pog slammers to sell to each other for $20 and hundreds of hours turning out exotic wood finials that nobody wants.

Developing BeOS in 2018 seems similar.
