he uses the semicolon incorrectly twice (as a miracle, the third and last time he uses it, I think is actually correct). In both cases I did note it could've been em dash. The internet, btw, is having trouble understanding what an "en dash" is or how it is not an em dash.

I would say in both instances em dash, not en dash or hyphen, would be appropriate.

This makes me want to be in a gang or a rap group... And I want my street name to be ENdash and I want you to be EMdash (obvs) and we can roll the streets being all like "yo bitch! Switch up that past participle before I bust your shit!"

I agree that time three is correct. I don't think you need to resort to em dash in the other two instances; a comma would suffice since what comes after each looks like a modifying clause for the previous statement. Not that I think an em would be incorrect, just that normally when I use them it's to really pause and make an aside. I think the author's intent is just to modify the statement, in which case I would always go comma.

So, my understanding is that either an em dash or comma would be correct in these instances. I could be wrong. I voted for el dash because I feel like the way the author is abusing the semicolon indicates they're trying to create a break but then add on/move on. However, esp in the first, I see how you could argue a comma would be more, or at least as, appropriate. I've tended to be an em-dash happy writer in the past, myself, which would also explain why I chose that option.

I think em dashes are uglier versions of space + hyphen + space...but I'll try to start using them from now on.

My word program corrects "space hyphen space" into longer dashes which I believe are meant to be em dashes - yours doesn't?

MS Office does it, but my Markdown editor and browser don't and that's where I type 90% of my things.
