I don't mind the sound of cicadas, but I despise the nasty shells they leave behind. My favorite climbing tree as a kid was unusable for a few weeks after the molt because every favorite hand hold would have at least 2 or 3 of the crunchy little bastards on it.

Insect life cycles are weird and gross. Grubs especially so.

If you squint real hard and look at them at just the right angle, wax worms are kind of cute.

I can appreciate the aesthetic value of them as an adult.

I also have a strong-ass tactile memory/disgust reaction of the shells unexpectedly crunching under my fingers and palms. Some biases remain even after they are identified.
