Plants and factories are already starting to move back into the United States, and big league — Ford, General Motors, so many of them.

Three paragraphs later.

Jobs are pouring out of the country; you see what’s going on with all of the companies leaving our country, going to Mexico and other places, low pay, low wages, mass instability overseas, no matter where you look.

My working theory:

He thinks/acts on a smaller time scale. He doesn't think about strategies or tactics, only about right now, and only about what will make the next minute better.

This results in taking both sides of any issue. It results in an apparently idiotic stream of decisions and lack of direction. It also results in an endless supply of short clips his supporters will love.

I think he is brilliant at the "right now" time scale. When there are reports of power struggles, unfound light switches, and bathrobe wandering, how can ge slow the talk of disarray? Send an angry minion to disavow all bathrobe lies!

Because the spectacle will draw attention:

If my mother is any indication, you're close - it's about his appearance rather than pleasure (narcissists don't feel worthy of pleasure) - but this isn't about that concerning the quotes above.

Imagine a world where everything and everyone is either with you or against you, no exceptions. Everyone must be either your friend (or, as close to a friend as you as a narcissist can afford) or your enemy (which entails that they must be plotting against you or actively sabotaging your life already if they said as much as a word of perceived critique towards you).

You live in a constant fear, because since most people don't give a crap about you, they automatically move themselves to the "enemy" category. Whatever's inside you (and it certainly doesn't come close to an "inner world") is so fragile that anything could break it - unless, of course, you retaliate with a nuclear strike: that's the only way you can keep your self intact.

But you see people generally enjoying themselves - a luxury you can't possible afford because of how little you think yourself to be - and you're not okay with that. Why aren't they as crippled as you are? How dare they see anything better than "I'm going to die from another bad remark" around? So you bring them down to your level - someplace you can thrive because you've lived there for so long. You bring them closer to you because maybe, maybe, then they can see how you suffer and pity you - something you'd firmly push away yet crave more than oxygen.

It also bring people's attention to you because people listen to horror stories in secret hopes that those are true (it brings knowledge, and knowledge is power), and if you "tell it like it is" with confidence that a narcissist's boast owns a lot of, you get their attention. This is very short-span a solution, so you have to keep inventing.

Imagine this, put a blonde wig on it, and you have your current president.

It's only a part of the tan master, but it's a relevant part.

consistency < confidence

That is actually true: people listen to those who speak confidently, even if it betrays logic at certain points.
