Close friend of my wife's set off in June for a 12-month vagabonding adventure with her long-term boyfriend and their 6-year-old daughter. She knew the adventure would make or break the relationship.

She showed up Friday, hot off a flight from Soekarno, the relationship broken.

Your time has made you what you are, and your journey has brought you to your current place in time. You have no children together, your assets have already been dissolved, and she's half a world away. It sucks, no doubt: but you have a job, you have a way forward, and you have only the baggage you wish to drag with you. You could not have made a cleaner break.

So I'm sorry. And I sympathize. But you have three weeks until the calendar rolls over to a whole new experience. Do not drag her energy into the future with you.
