Mother Teresa: Hell's Angel An acquaintance of mine lived and worked in Kolkata at the end of the 70s. He visited her home for the dying in Kalighat several times. She was raising millions of dollars for that project specifically and it was almost all being diverted to Rome. He speculates it was going directly to the pope. He said he was appalled by what he saw, the conditions were primitive and (despite the name of the project, Nirmal Hriday "pure heart" the patients' treatment was heartless and substandard. He said it should have been shut down by the government, but she had strong political connections by that time, both in India and elsewhere.
My grandparents gave her thousands because she was a good Nun who was loved and respected during her time in Ireland. Yea... about that Then again, nuns in Ireland did not exactly have a cakewalk made of sunshine and rainbows Note the dates of the abuse, the mass graves, the rampant rape of children by the nuns, the open slavery of women and girls under the guise of serving the church. The apology is more recent than 9/11. I am not joking about the mass graves either “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority; still more when you superadd the tendency of the certainty of corruption by authority.” link There may have been a time when Mother Teresa honestly thought she was doing good works. Maybe the fame got to her. Maybe she was always... off? I guess is the best word? But there can no longer be a doubt that she and her organization did more to hurt in the long run, including burning people who gave money to charities like her, but now won't ever give again due to the new stigmas. I know I will no longer give charity money to churches. And that is going to the legacy of people like her.
