Yeah, ETH got really dumb yesterday, too. According to my widgets it hit like $8.99 on Kraken for a little bit.

My personal opinion is that this is the sort of thing that happens when pie-eyed computer scientists create something untraceable with real cash value - I mean, this is the biggest theft since a guy named Jed, who wrote some software called "eDonkey2000" used his side project (Magic The Gathering Online eXchange) to lose Four Hundred and Fifty Flipping Million Dollars in value. That's half the build cost of this thing:

Or two of these:

Or one of these:

Eventually, the big boys will come in to purge the universe of all this (highly successful) amateur-hour Superman III bullshit but in the meantime, Ethereum ends up the number two and number three largest currencies by market cap because a pissing match betwixt coders ends up generating a quarter billion dollars.

eDonkey was the peer to peer network that thought content-addressing was a good idea, so the same file with multiple names would be treated as one file. And it does sound like a good idea, until the kiddy fiddlers realize they can get plausible deniability out of it. Then it becomes a game of chance, where you might get the book/mp3/whatever you asked for, or you might get r@ygold.

There is a reason that ed2k is not one of the things people talk about when they wax nostalgic about the golden age of peer to peer networks.
