They must look like a club or a cult symbolic to an outsider unless they have a name an/or a link on them - and even then... Why do it? It isn't like Hubski needs new users more than in needs internal credibility, unlike ad-supported platforms like Reddit.

Why do it? Because once, while going through a toll booth in Baltimore someone saw one. I once saw one on the back of a car in Toledo. It's fun. I enjoy puting them out there. I don't think any of us harbor any delusions that it will drive any traffic to the site. They're like little calling cards all over the globe.
