A soccer fan makes an obscene comment to a female reporter while an interview with another person is broadcast live. The comment maker disappears. The reporter noticed several soccer fans were supporting the jerk and confronts them. They continue to be disrespectful. Video goes viral.
Turns out one of the guys makes over 100K in a government job. He's identified and fired. Best tweet on this:
"Be abusive in real world, get caught on TV, outed via social media, fired from good job all in 24 hours. Quite a thing."
Quite a thing indeed. Is it "freedom of speech" to interrupt a reporter's interview with a sexually harassing statement? Nope. It's abuse.
I'm tempted to make the obscene statement the tag for this post. But it's too rude.
People seem to forget that freedom of speech works differently in Canada than it does in the US. You cannot say whatever you want, whenever you want, to whomever you want. It's why the Westboro Baptist Church is not welcome up here. This should be taken for what it is, which is sexual harassment and disorderly conduct, and the person should be charged accordingly. Frankly, I would almost go as far as to say that it could be considered a violation of the Ontario Human Rights Code. From the Code: And Whereas it is public policy in Ontario to recognize the dignity and worth of every person and to provide for equal rights and opportunities without discrimination that is contrary to law, and having as its aim the creation of a climate of understanding and mutual respect for the dignity and worth of each person so that each person feels a part of the community and able to contribute fully to the development and well-being of the community and the Province; I'd throw the book at this guy, ESPECIALLY considering he's a public employee. Considering he went to Laurier in 2005, he's easily in his 30s and should fucking know better. Hell, a child would know better. I think what makes me the most mad is that he is so unapologetic when Hunt confronts him.Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world and is in accord with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as proclaimed by the United Nations;
What a bunch of tools. I could have much more empathy for their idiocy if they were maybe 15 or 16 year olds. Hell, even a college aged kid might not know how lewd and insensitive this is, but they're clearly old enough to know better. "My mom would laugh." -What a tool.
Maybe this is a TV journalism oasis of ethics, public service and quality, in which case I'll take all I have to say back. I hate TV news. ninety nine percent of it is a fetid pile of tripe. I've been close enough to a few events, or just had their goddamn camera pushed in my snout while trying to buy groceries or what not (man in the street comment on non-news public interest bullshit) enough times to be granted the hallowed privileged of giving my opinion on the local news station at least a half a dozen times. I have so little interest in being sandwiched between the "Eye on Your Pets" segment, or the fatal car crash on I-205, that I unleash a comment so laced with profanities that it would be a news story itself if it made it on air. I've talked with the journalist off camera about the issues they are devoting a brief and uncaring 15 minutes of their lives on and talked to them about why I don't want to make a comment. Their responses have ranged between "yup, this story has no value to the public beyond the fact that it's gruesome or salacious, just the same as every story I've ever done. I hate my life," to stupid hacks that think they are breaking fucking Watergate. Next time I'm asked to comment on a story I'm just going to tell them not to bother because I'm going to look dead in the camera and say "FHRITP". Fuck TV news. It's the least worthy news medium that exists. I always dream that one network news entertainment venue in my area will devote itself to covering the things that matter in detail. At least I have a publicly funded NPR affiliate and KBOO radio to address things that actually matter. The fact that these toothpaste and car sales people can feel offended by anything when their only purpose is to titillate and shock the public to push valueless cooperate consumerism makes me shake me head in disgust. When the revolution comes these cop apologist, racist, not serving the public, cooperate shills are going to wish they had to worry about FHRITP.
All of what you are saying may be true, and it would be one thing if, after a soccer game, a person interrupted a live interview and said "After the revolution, TV news will become responsible." (Maybe they do, but it we haven't noticed). It's another thing altogether to interrupt female reporters mid-broadcast and say FHRITP. Is that coming from a resentment of TV news or resentment of seeing a woman handling a microphone at an all-male sports event. If the statement were motivated by hatred of TV news for all the reasons you state, then male broadcasters would be targeted as well - maybe they are. Maybe the TV-news hating revolutionaries do interrupt live male broadcasters and say FHRUTA - but we just haven't noticed.
