Funny, I just posted a related comment. Morgellons really disturbs me.
What disturbs me is that now Morgellons sufferers are going to point to the Great Lakes as some kind of evidence to support their disease/perceived condition. Do you believe Morgellons is a real thing, and that's what disturbs you, or do you believe it's not a real thing, and the fact that people can become so obsessed with and certain of a phenomenon that is entirely in their own heads is what disturbs you? Or maybe it's just a creepy idea even if it's not real and that sqwuicks you out. I like to read about it, it interests me, but I think disturbs me on a level too.
I'm nearly certain that it isn't a genuine physical condition. But not only is it a creepy idea, but for some reason, the specific mindset behind it disturbs me in a unique way. I don't have any obsessive compulsive behaviors, but in the right frame of mind, I can imagine the sort of feelings/impulse that might underpin OCD. There's something about Morgellons where I imagine that I could also explore such a state of mind, but fuck no, I don't even want to look down that street.
Read The Heretics by Will Storr (different title in US, I believe) which has a whole chapter on Morgellons sufferers.
