Hoisted by one's own petard I believe that a petard is an explosive grenade of sorts. The idea is that you are hoist (blown into the air) by your own petard (grenade) detonating accidentally. Hurt Locker ... meet Shakespeare.

Interesting phrase, I've never heard of it before. Is it one that you find is used commonly where you are at?
