Hoisted by one's own petard

I believe that a petard is an explosive grenade of sorts. The idea is that you are hoist (blown into the air) by your own petard (grenade) detonating accidentally.

It's from Shakespeare actually - I read this article a long time ago which is why I bring it up now, not to be a smartass. psulli you are correct. To me, it has a Monty Python sort of humor about it.
