It's a harmful myth that artists create out of thin air. It's both stunting to young artists' growth, because many may try avoiding the use of powerful methods because of their lack of "purity", and a contributor to the absurd copyright laws we have today. Artists have always taken from other artists, just look at Led Zeppelin for example, and the notion that one's work has to be completely original for it to be truly yours comes from a fantasy world.
