Free-hand, but in that particular photo I think I was seated and had my arms rested on my knees. I also got lucky that the horizon line is straight across on this one, that's my biggest weakness with taking pictures on my phone. Here's another decent shot I got from the same week.

These are both great shots but this one is way more ominous. It makes you feel like you are floating on a skiff in some cold-cold water. Great shot!
