AWESOME! While I'm a fan of Elvis Costello, I think keeping it simple and at a bar, perhaps close to the Mall/Monuments would be a good idea. Would be cool to have some drinks and go explore the capital at night. Sweet!
_refugee_, wasoxygen, mk, b_b, insomniasexx, Meriadoc, arguewithatree, humanodon and anyone else interested in joining our Hubski meet up on Friday, Nov 22nd. Here are some bars I would like to consider: Bourbon -Adams Morgan Big Hunt 18th St Lounge Russia House Let's be decisive and pick one. If you think these suggestions suck, that's fine just suggest several alternatives. I'm excited to see you guys. My vote is for "Bourbon" only because of the name.
Bourbon gets my vote because of the name as well. It is more a hike from the nearest metro station than the other options, if that matters to anyone. The metro closes at 3 on Friday night, and you all talk like that's when things are just getting started. I will have ghosted by then. ESL made me pay a cover the last time I went there, the guy wanted ten each from us. I made a sad face and walked away, then came back with a 20 and he let us in for ten, like he was doing us a favor. Another bad memory: cW once stood me up when we were going to meet there. It's a cool spot though, headquarters of Thievery Corporation. Russia House is nice too, and kind of classy. Big Hunt is obviously a Battle Chess duck.
Okay, if we hit up Bourbon, we have to go across the street to Smoke and Barrel as well. I absolutely love the place; they have a fantastic rotating beer selection and they have some incredible wings. A head's up: AdMo gets extremely wild Friday and Saturday nights, but those two places should be moderately calm. Russia House is also a really great place, but I haven't spent much time there, and I don't know what the bar is like.
Indeed, this will be worth violating my INTJ principles for; count me in. There is a group of photographers which gathers near the Iwo Jima memorial in Arlington every year or so to try and capture the image you shared when the full moon and Masonic axis of the National Mall come into alignment. There is evidence to suggest that this will happen on February 22 (with a waning 80% illuminated gibbous moon) sometime after 9:19 p.m. I will bring my camera gear in case. EDIT: I mean November 22. The photography group assembled in February.
I too look forward to that day. If theadvancedapes is right, then we should have an increased efficiency in our mode of transportation just around the corner. It seems that a new energy source, an advancement in communication and a new form of transport like to come together at major human epochs. We're in one right now -What will the transport be? Will it happen prior to Nov 22nd so you can be there? Unlikely unfortunately.
Where exactly in the city are you coming to? Just in general or do you have a particular spot? I have suggest some great bars, depending on how much of the city you want to see. thenewgreen said he wanted to stick around the mall/monuments, but that's a really spot and, well, somewhat boring part of town. There is some really great stuff nearby, though, and the bar Penn Social might be a good place to go; it has board games and whatnot, but it's something of a younger crowd and gets insane some nights. Or for the same distance, there's the world famous ChurchKey bar with an incredible beer selection.
You're probably right, we can "site see" during the day. Better to pick a cool venue. I find for these it's key to have space and to be able to hear one another. My brother lives in DC and I'm sure he will have some suggestions too.
Penn Social might be a bad choice then. Friday nights can get pretty rowdy there.
It would be Friday, Nov 22nd. It would be so great to meet you and humanodon in person.
I have put it on my calendar. I will need some more detailed plans about timing and, well, what the general plans are...but I'm down. I have facial piercings and tattoos, everyone. Two math tattoos, even. Should be fun. I suppose I could try and pre-order some Hubski swag.
That's awesome, all of it. I'm looking forward to meeting you EHB! You have to say the word "grasps" for me in person. I edited that podcast many times and always enjoyed that. btw, I have it on good authority that steve is nearly done with the video!! It should be released soon. See ya in DC, tattoos and all!
For whoever is organizing this, I assume thenewgreen, I expect the earliest I would be able to arrive in DC is around 6 p.m., this being if I drove. With traffic, probably more like 7. I do have a friend I could arrange to crash with - probably anyway (sadly, not a Hubskier) - but I guess my question is, is the plan to go out on the town as late as heck that night and then people will crash in the city? That seems to be what you did at the last meet-up. I don't really need any more details than that at the moment but I did just want to kind of check what those sorts of plans were.
Sweet! We always love meeting new Hubskiers! We're a fun bunch, although under the right (wrong?) circumstances, I tend to get incoherent as the night progresses. Not sure how I missed this comment last week (I was on a bender recently that kept me from life, so that's probably how), but anyway, hope you can make it. I promise the Hubski team will buy you drinks.
