God. What's it with my luck these past two days?

Meek's Cutoff is a very boring, narrative free story about a group of settlers going west. On their way they encounter one of the many American Indians who inhabit the lands and a conflict arises between their shit guide who is an asshole and the new awesome native guide who seems confused by the way white people is.

Its really hard to review this for much the same reason it was hard to review Alien: Origin. There's no story beyond what I just told you. Its very slow. Most of the movie is people walking, so while it really great to look at and sort of just have on, trying to watch this movie and offer criticisms is like looking up at a perfectly blue sky and going "which clouds should have been moved?"

There's nothing wrong with the structure presented. Its story free but gives a good look at a time that people actually don't spend a lot of their lives remembering. The acting is good, it has people you'll recognize, its a well shot movie, good soundtrack, etc. Its a well made movie that doesn't try to take you anywhere all that interesting and it succeeds.

I'll be honest and admit that I actually kind of expected this based on the netflix review right underneath the movie. I mean, sure, I could force some sort of analysis of the sound design or how the film is shot, or point out how this structure is acceptable or even refreshing, but there's just not that much else to talk about.

Other films are better shot, other films have better scores, and other films have a more relaxed structure. Meek's Crossing is nothing revolutionary. It is a film for people who don't have ADHD. I have ADHD. I would not have done well in a theater with this on.

So here's a brief review, and don't you bitch and moan since this week there's an extra:

Meek's Crossing is a very technically well done film that follows a loose if at all present narrative structure. It touches on a great deal of humanity and the struggle of a small group to overcome its environments and does a good job of communicating the feeling of the world to the audience. You will leave your couch - because good luck seeing this anywhere else - wondering what people thought about while they spent hours and hours on a horse in the midwest, and how come you didn't realize it was Bruce Greenwood with a beard that whole time.

Is there a best part?

The poster is super fucking radical.
