A couple weeks ago my wife asked me, in tears, what we could do about the fact that we're putting children in cages. A thousand miles away, on the other end of the phone, I effectively told her "fuckall." I already give to the ACLU. This shit's already in congress.

I had a friend in 1st year law at Northwestern, interning with the US Attorney, when we first found out about Guantanamo. The ideas of extraordinary rendition and extralegal incarceration were gobsmackingly anti-american back then. Here it is, 18 years later, and there's still 40 people at Guantanamo.

I've spent the past two weeks trying to turn that "fuckall" into "something, anything, sweet jesus this isn't who we are, is it?"
