He was portrayed as an antagonist in the "Amadeus" movie which is where most people have heard the name. His Requiem gets played often.
Salieri got such a bum rap out of that movie (which I happen to love). He championed Mozart and taught Lizst and Beethoven. But as head honcho under the Hapsburgs his job was to champion the popular music of the time and Mozart was a burlesque performer and spendthrift so there was only so much he could do, especially after Mozart bolted on Salzburg.
