I've seen a few articles detailing Hitler's rise to power and the parallels that can be drawn with Trump. Is there merit to this? I'm not super familiar with the inner workings of the US political system, so is a similar scenario even possible?

I don't think we can know. There's no precedent for dangerous celebrity morons being elected to executive office. Even Hitler was a politician.
