In the 2008 auditor general's report, the National Capital Commission said the home hadn't had major renovations in 50 years and needed $10 million of work.
It was stated the occupants would have to move out of the stone mansion for 12 to 15 months.
The damn thing's a national embarassment, and I see it as the perfect metaphor for the rest of the infrastructure in Canada right now. If you've driven on our highways and byways recently, you know that some of them are in desperate need of repair, of expansion, of updating. We need to build some new highways, especially around our urban centres - Hwy 417 in Ottawa is a total disaster EVERY Rush hour because there is no other main thoroughfare to get from east to west until you hit Hunt Club or Baseline, which are 20 minutes south of downtown where everyone works (and you'd have to take in-town roads to get there, no north south thoroughfare).
Toronto is just as bad (read: Hot Garbage), and Hwy 69 to Sudbury, the main road to go west from Toronto to the rest of the country is a Two-lane windy death trap that's been "in process" of four-laning for more than a decade because it's got no budget or political motivation.
I can only speak for Ontario and Quebec (which is a whole other kettle of fish, don't get a montrealer started on their infrastructure woes), but I can imagine that Winnipeg and other main cities have the same problem. Edmonton's got a HUGE urban sprawl, Northern communities have no services.
Sometimes you gotta spend some fuckin' money, dawg. Just spend it on the right things.
