I am repeating a lot of what is in the article but I love this story so am saying it for anyone one else that may not be able to see the article:

Peter Norman wore a badge on the Olympic podium for the 200 yard race in support of the Olympic Project for Human Rights (OPHR) and his 2 black American co-medalists who gave the "black power" salute. On the way out to the medal ceremony, Norman saw the OPHR badge being worn by Paul Hoffman, a member of the US Rowing Team, and asked him if he could wear it. Carlos left his pair of gloves in the Olympic Village and Norman was the one that suggested they share the pair and wear them on different hands. This is the reason for Smith raising his right fist, while Carlos raised his left.

Australia's Olympic authorities reprimanded Norman for his participation and the Australian media ostracised him. Despite Norman running qualifying times for the 100 m five times and 200 m 13 times during 1971-72, the Australian Olympic track team did not send him to the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

Thirty-eight years later, both Smith and Carlos gave eulogies and were pallbearers at Norman's funeral.
