I think it's extremely naive to say they're stupid. They know exactly what they're doing and they knew what effect the austerity measures would have on the economy. Heck, I knew it, as did most people. So how can anyone seriously believe that the guys in charge of running the economy didn't? It's like saying you know more about designing rocket engines than an engineer working at NASA.
