M.C. Davis, former gambler and businessman, stands in his 54,000-acre preserve, Nokuse Plantation, in the Florida Panhandle. It's the largest privately owned conservation area in the southeastern United States.

Leo Drey just died a few weeks ago in Missouri. He was the largest single land owner in the state and gave it all to conservation. He is considered the father or selective lumber harvest and made his millions restoring wrecked timber land and then cultivating it for years and years of timber harvest while respecting the land providing him his bounty. He is a hero in my book and helped to create one of my favorite places in the world, The Ozark Trail in Missouri.
