This has got a little bit of a different vibe, and I wouldn't say that I've been obsessed with it...but I had a friend from Portugal introduce me to Fado, which came about from "Saudade and the melancholy of our people". I don't really understand the words, but I love that she was willing to share that part of her culture with me. It's caused me to start researching Portuguese history (especially post WWII), so I thought I'd share!

Also, Saudade is a really interesting word that apparently has no direct English translation. From Wikipedia:

    Saudade is a word in Portuguese and Galician that has no direct translation in English. It describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing may never return.

Also, I realize I lack the proper cultural background to truly appreciate this music, but it's a cool glimpse into a culture I had never considered before.
