Powerful companies are preventing local governments from providing an important service to their citizens. More than 100 years ago, it was electricity. Today, it is the public provision of communications services.

mk: It's becoming essential, and it will be made public in time. I don't really mind much whether or not the Federal government steps in though. If some states start providing it, those states that don't will be shooting themselves in the foot.

Much of the infrastructure provided by these telecoms is subsidized to begin with. If it can be done cheaper publicly, then why not? I have two bad options to choose from. I really wish my city provided it. I'd rather pay them than Comcast. At this point I'd almost be willing to pay them more.
