The tipping point for me and also my baseline for exposure/thoughts about trans folks came in high school, when I read this book simply titled Sex (tried looking for it just now, but lord knows that search isn't gonna go anywhere), and they discussed the Mojave alyha. They even went so far as to rename their male genitals into corresponding parts of the female anatomy, and I just thought that was so damn elegant.
Soon after, one of my teachers saw me with the book, confiscated it, called my mother (Fox-news-watching-Focus-On-The-Family-subscribing baptist type), and berated me for even thinking I could expose others to inappropriate content such as this. I don't know what she expected but I just doubled down on beliefs and empathy, considering even vicarious knowledge about trans issues and sex itself could be acted upon with so much hate.
