"If we are lending money that ostensibly we don't have to kids who have no hope of making it back in order to train them for jobs that clearly don't exist, I might suggest that we've gone around the bend a little bit," says TV personality Mike Rowe. Rowe is the longtime host of Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs, where he takes on gigs straight out of Bob Dylan songs: working on fishing boats, sewer systems, oil derricks, slaughterhouses, and more.

I definitely find that other professions are looked down upon by people in college. There have been many occasions where I've called other engineering majors out on looking down on liberal arts or even other, supposedly "lesser" engineering degrees. At least when I was in high school the PR campaign of "college or bust" was still going on. I don't want that to come across as a "do whatever the hell you want, follow your passoin, etc." bit, but I do think there should be more information readily available on apprenticeships and non-college oriented career paths.

The bit about rising college costs is also spot on. I just received an email from my college patting themselves on the back for keeping the cost increase for next under 5% and being a "better-value" than x out of x colleges...which brings my tuition to being nearly 10k higher this year than when I entered in 2010.

Side Note: A few years back a friend of mine received an autographed letter from Mike Rowe congratulating him on achieving the status of Eagle Scout.
