I’m just loving that everyone here has tacitly accepted the potato sack as a work fixture like a fax machine or coffee maker.

I finished physical therapy for a repetitive stress hand injury a couple weeks ago. At the end of the stretch of therapy, the issue was basically gone, but now that I've been out of it for some time the issue has regressed somewhat :/

zebra2  ·  995 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Dear Hubski, what are you reading this summer?

I've been powering through Patrick O'Brian for almost a year now, and am on book 14 of the Aubrey–Maturin series, so I'll probably be keeping up with that.

I like your island a lot. Definitely like what you did with the main square and surrounding houses with tons of flowers. Also seeing a lot of my own design choices being reflected there. Even came across a person that was pretty much my doppelgänger.

So I'm sitting at home. Started feeling ill yesterday, so I'll be stuck in the house until I can get tested and see if I'll be able to go to work next week.

For pretty much every company I've known, people near retirement age hold some form of the "it used to be a great company to work for" view. Probably has something to do with the way companies tend to get into "cut the fat" mode as they grow, or how things get automated and outsourced, or how pensions have shrunk and vanished, or some other variation of those themes.

Do it! I'm for sure supportive of anyone that has any spontaneous thoughts or things they want to share using the #scificlub tag.

Also, general question out of curiosity: who's read World War Z?

I've queued up a new music release. My productivity torture for the first phase of the pandemic.

I've been revisiting everything Ghost In the Shell recently, no doubt prompted by the new (kinda ugly) netflix series.

The DeWalt decal is a nice touch.

Back to work 2 days a week. Pretty relaxed, but there's not much I can get done in a 2-day stint anyways.

Academics are some of the most antsy MFers to get back to work. As soon as a sister facility announced there were back in operation I started getting emails about whether I was operating too. Nobody has any financial resilience to withstand something like this, and who knows what research funding will look like in the post-COVID world.

Do they really? As a kinda-not-really vegetarian, fried chicken is my achilles heel. I am intrigued.

zebra2  ·  1494 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Economics of 24/7 Lo-Fi Hip-Hop YouTube Livestreams

Ok, funny thing. I'm part of a facebook group "lofi family" in which various lofi producers hang and network and shamelessly plug their stuff etc. I make music that kinda-sometimes-sorta counts as lofi hip-hop, so I keep that group in the pocket for when I want to shamelessly plug my own stuff. Side note: a post to an interest group like these can easily be 100x more effective than a paid ad from Facebook.

Spotify does an annual roundup for artists where they post your stats for the year, so inevitably all these kinds of groups get a thread or ten where people chime-in with their stats. A surprising number of people in the lofi group post numbers that are pretty insane, like a million streams or something close. Sure, part of this is probably classic Instagram-style posturing, but I also believe it. Some of the people posting those numbers may in fact be the "big names" in the genre right now, but could you think of any recognizable artist name in the genre? Every artist that inevitably comes up had their popularity 20-30 years ago. Lofi is a pretty faceless genre at the moment, but super ubiquitous.

I've been lusting after one of those. The TX81z is kinda gritty for a yamaha FM. The TQ5 is even gnarlier.

zebra2  ·  1591 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Of no surprise to anyone, Devin Nunes is a complete pillock.

Someone said that a primary goal of republican questioning is to make the process as dull and unappealing as possible so that the public will tune out. Nunes' time this morning really seemed to hammer that theory home. It also seems notable to me that very little questioning actually contributes to a refutation of the accusations against Trump.

zebra2  ·  1591 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Is It Time Gauguin Got Canceled?

It's an interesting problem. I think it makes more sense to present it as it really is than to try and bury it. On one hand, it seems a little conflicting to reject prejudice and amorality but keep its products. On the other hand, trying to erase it from public consciousness seems like a disservice to progress. The "if we don't learn from history, it's doomed to repeat itself etc. etc." cliche. From that vantage point, it's really important to memorialize the dirty stuff.

zebra2  ·  1617 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Corporate Music - How to Compose with no Soul

In contrast, in the totally weird corner of corporate music...

MUJI was a Japanese product line of packaged food and various other household products. In 1983, they opened their first stand-alone store, commissioning Hosono to compose background music for which to play in the store. Supposedly only one of the three tracks was ever used, and the original cassette release, as aforementioned, only contained two of the three tracks.

I particularly like the Cat name generation, or that a shelter actually used generated names for guinea pigs.

I really want to use Scarlet Be Thy Coat as a band name.

The Hercules beetle is dope. Takes me back to 5th grade when I made a science report on beetles. Sent an email to an entomologist in Australia and he wrote back.

I don't know any particular course to follow, but start hanging around some audio production communities and then you'll start hearing about the stuff you should be learning about. r/wearethemusicmakers is not bad. I'm sure there are countless forums. Also, at a certain point, share and look for feedback. Hubski has a few people floating around that know their stuff in this regard too.
