It's worth learning about. CSS can be really powerful and it's declarative nature is useful.

zaphar  ·  3809 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Tetris & the power of CSS

So my day job for the last 6 months has been writing CSS tooling and he is absolutely correct. CSS takes some work to understand and neither LESS or SASS is going to make that any easier. They may make it easier to write some of it but they won't make it easier to understand it.

As a somewhat random aside, CSS is a pain to parse. Just sayin.

I don't know if there is a term for it but slip into a sort of hyper focus really easily. So easily that it's something of a problem. When someone can wave their hands in front of your face and you don't notice it's a little disconcerting.

So I guess I hit flow anytime I attempt to focus.

I'm eclectic in my scotch loves but this one sounds interesting. If you like the non-peaty scotches I'm also a fan of Glen Roths

My wife and I have had to move around a lot for most of our marriage. As we moved we ended up leaving behind some items of great sentimental value to my wife. As I realized the pain this caused her, one christmas I made her a chest with a note inside that promised no matter where we went or what happened anything in this chest would come with us no matter what.

I would grab that chest.

zaphar  ·  3832 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Why is there only one model of iPhone?

All of this is speculation on my part since I don't work for Apple or have any access to someone who does.

1. Apple has the iPhone, the iPad, and the iPad mini. This works out to 3 models of mobile device.

This is probably enough differentiation on a practical use level.

2. Most companies that have many different models of desktop or laptop are are targeting specific price points in an attempt capture more of the market. It's commodity computing.

Apple doesn't seem to care about price points or offering a commodity computing device. They offer basically 2 models of laptop and 2 models of Desktop. Each is widely considered to be top of the line for their particular category. Apple doesn't care of the middle or low end for those categories. This removes any incentive to ship multiple models.

In short Apple's game is not to be a commodity producer but a Luxury Good producer. They ship exactly one model for category of computing device and that device is intended to be the best in class for that category.

There is just something about the image of DEATH cutting grass "ONE BLADE AT A TIME" that makes me laugh.

zaphar  ·  3835 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are you reading now? Is it any good?

Terry Pratchett is easily one of my favorite authors. And DEATH is one of my favorite characters in his books.

zaphar  ·  3835 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are you reading now? Is it any good?

"I shall wear midnight" - Terry Pratchett.

Because I felt like a humorous yet poignant read.

Hrmm that was kind of fun.

1) The lone astronaught tried to ignore the fly buzzing around his ear making that annoying sound till he wanted to rip off his helmet and enjoy the cold silence of space.

2) In retrospect, Qentin probably shouldn't have taken the clamshell with him when he left the beach.

Before the Presidential election he was also pretty well known for statistical analysis of sports. He writes well and his analysis is usually pretty good. He also makes it clear that he isn't "predicting" outcomes. He's reporting a statistical analysis which sometimes doesn't match reality so he's that rare commodity an "honest" statistician.

Definitely. I don't know how many times I've started my "Learn to Draw" campaign...

Probably the biggest win is that this software can work without a central server in a peer-to-peer manner. This means setting up a secure vpn network with a group of friends/collaborators is theoretically easier and less vulnerable to single points of failure.

zaphar  ·  3849 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Legal Analysis of Microsofts BingItOn Campaign

I'm pretty biased since I work for Google so of course I disbelieved Bing's claims.

However I found the legal analysis the more interesting part of this. I wonder how liable the company doing the research for Microsoft would be.

I use mashed potatoes in place of most of the flour and when it comes out right it's like eating buttered mashed potatoes in handy finger food form.

I have this sort of vague plan to one day own one again. Not sure when but someday.

zaphar  ·  3857 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: No Way, Man! Last VW Bus To Soon Roll Off Assembly Line : The Two-Way : NPR

I had Vanagon but not the pop up camper version. I also had the factory manual which basically covered every nut and bolt on it.

It was easily my favorite vehicle ever to work on. Everything was easily reachable with standard tools and not so complex that you couldn't diagnose problems without a computer.

zaphar  ·  3857 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: No Way, Man! Last VW Bus To Soon Roll Off Assembly Line : The Two-Way : NPR

I used to own a VW van.

I swear it had two feet of space around the engine. Easiest vehicle to work on I've ever owned. I miss it now :-(

zaphar  ·  3863 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: CDC Threat Report: ‘We Will Soon Be in a Post-Antibiotic Era’

My wife and I make a point not to buy antibiotic soaps or hand cleansers for our home and always ask the doctor if a prescribed antibiotic is truly necessary. We've left doctors before because we felt they overprescribed antibiotics before. We don't mind letting a cold run it's course. Sometimes you're just too sick and an antibiotic makes sense but our society today seems obsessed with them.

Just look at the line for your favourite bathrooms and there will be an antibiotic gel there.

I'm far more interested in Polymer and Angular lately though.

zaphar  ·  3883 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How Technology Wrecks the Middle Class

Anomalies in a distribution shouldn't be a suprise. National statistics will tell a different story than regional statistics and that is to be expected. You can't generalize to a region from stats at the national region anymore than you can generalize to a nation from a regional level.

It's easily possible that the percentage stays in single digits and yet certain regions show a different story. There will always be outliers. Fixing the outlier's problem will require different approaches than the fixing national problems. Which is why voting for a president in the hopes that he'll fix employment in your city is an unreliable approach.

Look locally to actually fix local problems. Look nationally to make an environment where it is possible to fix local issues.

zaphar  ·  3883 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How Technology Wrecks the Middle Class

This was an interesting and as yet unheard by me take on two hotbutton issues. The polarization of the upper, middle, and lower class occupations and technologies affect on the marketplace.

Not sure if it's an accurate portrayal since it was devoid of meaningful statistics but it's believable.

I'm a kinesis guy myself. the code keyboard looks interesting but I like the arrangement of the keys on a kinesis better. My wrists wouldn't like the Code keyboard. 150 is way less than 300 though so it sounds like a bargain to me :-)

That title is misleading. It's pure speculation on the part of an analyst and not based even on hearsay.
