I'm well! Sorry about dropping off the earth. How have you been holding up?

Hey, at least that's something. I'll try to be around more.

I'm the total opposite- what's the appeal of conversational podcasts? I hate hate hate them with a vengeance, they're longer, undirected, and feel lazy- a waste of the medium. They make me feel like I'm hanging out with two other people and they've locked me out of the conversation. The Hilarious World of Depression is my biggest offender of the medium, it feels like it's narrating over the discussion to insult my intelligence. This is probably just me.

Here's the thing for me as a web designer- the heaviest things in 99% of websites are never in the code, they're always in the images. Those extra 2mbs when someone in marketing forgets to resize the images add up, super fast. Why are kbs so important to web devs?

Good luck on the interview- kill 'em dead!

I keep expecting something from meditation, which keeps me from doing it regularly. Can I ask if anything has changed for you after half a year?

weewooweewoo  ·  2292 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Ask Hubski: What gaming console should I get for my 7 year old?

One thing I remember from my early childhood is that I had an uncle who had an NES system with Legend of Zelda 2 and Super Mario Bros 3. I was a pretty lucky kid who had a Super Nintendo and a Nintendo 64, but I loved going to my uncle's house to play on the older system.

Definitely get a Wii. The best part about is the backwards compatibility with Gamecube games. You have two generations worth of Nintendo games to play with.

For the Gamecube, I recommend Mario Kart Double Dash, Animal Crossing, and WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!.

For the Wii, I recommend Super Mario Galaxy, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, and Punch-Out!!

Out of curiosity, why did you choose oyster as your username?

I've gone quite a few days (individually) on just crunchy peanut butter. I eat it out of the jar with a spoon.

Ok, that was really cute. I think I got all of the timelines figured out, I really liked the secret one.

Don't be afraid of changing the subject of a conversation when it doesn't interest you! You can use small talk to ease in and out if it's not a natural transition.

Ugh, that's such bad luck. I'm sorry to hear. The one Moth Storyslam that happened in Anchorage was really good, and I got lucky because there were 20 entrants for 10 slots. I really hate the lottery format, but they probably do that so people don't leave after telling their story.

Really great show! there were hugs in the entire audience and someone broke down crying in the front row on their knees (fuck it, I teared up like 4 times during the show). They played the entire Life After Youth album in order, and came back for It's Okay for the encore.

So I asked Yasser your question just now (actually, I asked: "what's the best way to prepare for a tournament?"), I'm going to try to distill it the best I can:

I don't like general questions, because it usually depends on your level, the way that you prepare is much different depending on your competency. But a lot of people try to memorize a lot of opening theory and lines, and the problem with that is that it's easy to get them jumbled, I know that I did that many times in tournament situations. I think the most important thing is to try to bring energy to the tournament.

Thanks! I'm glad you checked out the stream too, it's been so fun being constantly surrounded by chess professionals. I'm getting a lot of practice in and getting rid of some of my bad chess habits. I'm making it my goal to feel confident enough to get a game off you next time!

The moth thrives on tragicomedy. You gotta make it seem like a complete fiasco

I'm going to be drunk at their party. On their livestream. Surrounded by famous / really good chess players. I'm crying on the inside >.<

I had the dumbest idea- as a Jaron, I want to interview everyone in the world named Jaron. I've always had a pet theory that people Jaron seem to be disproportionately eccentric and spaced around so that most people only know 1 Jaron in person at a time. Maybe a website where I ask Jarons to fill out a form of stock interview questions? I just don't know if Jaron Lanier would approve.

weewooweewoo  ·  2327 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Jaron Lanier Sees Silicon Valley’s Sinister Side

It occurred to me I might be pretty naive - I just thought that it's nice that he's willing to acknowledge the Bowling Alone effect that Facebook has propagated.

Oh god, this was me since the beginning of summer. I got myself a large nest egg and just stressed and depressed my way through it. It was really stressful because I still felt like there was something I should be doing at the back of my mind- getting a portfolio ready, working on lit.cat, make an improvement on a previous client's project- and I kind of got stuck in a tyranny of choices.

I'm thinking about making a website to curating single page web curios like this. I love them so much.

I have a Felix the Cat VHS set somewhere- I don't even remember any specific episodes. I'll find a Youtube collection somewhere. Hand drawn animation is nuts, it's the one job I'd rank above Astronaut. It takes so much work and so much skill. I still daydream about creating my own hand drawn Sakuga work, but it's too easy to convince myself it's too much work.

I really wanted to work in cartooning when I was a kid. I remember there was a newspaper cartoonist who visited my class when I was in 2nd grade, and I gave him a page of comics. It makes me cringe so hard because I know the comics in them were so terrible. I also had a comic in middle school where I recycled the jokes from a Bloom County collection because we didn't have any of Berkeley Breathed's comics in our newspaper. I would arrive early to every period and a good portion of my class liked reading them.

It would be years until I realized that people liked me because they thought I was cool, not because I was funny.

Man, I really don't want anyone to not play Cuphead because the game is difficult, but it's taken me at least 8 - 15 times to get through each level so far. Each level is slightly over 2 minutes long. I hope you think about whether you can handle being stuck for 30 minutes, because it feels so good if you can get over it.

I have a looping playlist of the music from the game with really exciting drum parts:

My bad, I didn't mean to suggest you shouldn't have corrected him. I definitely would done so too- bl00 has the idea covered better.

Also, please don't read that book, I do not want you associating that book with me.

Wait- show me that game. Even if you didn't know en passant was a real thing, I find it hard to believe that you would have gotten yourself into a losing position without knowing that rule.
