Yeah, it wasn't until this Planet Money piece came out that I realized that trucking is really that common. I can't help but wonder if everything targets office work as what the average job looks like thanks to that being what the media portrays it as. Which then begs the question of why that's the case. I have some ideas as to why that could be, but over all I think it's a very interesting question.

Honestly, going for all three days were exhausting. Maybe in a few years I'll see you in Seattle, it's high on my list for where I want to move once I'm ready for a new job.

psudo  ·  3195 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski, I think today we should all go out and do something fun

I was there for most of all three days, mostly staying at the Red/Green stages, except for Sleater-Kinney, as we were feeling kinda sick. We got home in time to catch the live stream and it was really well done, we might just do that next year for the acts that we want to see next year. The highlight for me was Run the Jewels, though. They put on a great show and got everyone who did a guest spot on their album to come out and perform it live. It was probably the most fun I've had at a concert.

I've encountered that some, it's generally when hubski is under heavy load and a refresh generally fixes it. That link loaded fine for me on mobile.

Nice. I went to Pitchfork last weekend and am only now feeling recovered. It was a lot of fun, but I doubt I'll ever do it again.

Yeah, that's some bs. I was planning on upgrading right away, but if they're bundling bloat with the actual operating system I'm not touching it.

psudo  ·  3197 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Apple Music is a nightmare and I’m done with it

I've honestly never encountered it, though I've heard it happens. I'm sure if I was having issues finding the music I wanted to listen to I'd be pretty quick to ditch it.

Mind telling me who they didn't have?

psudo  ·  3197 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Arkham Knight’s Big Problem: Female Representation [spoilers]

Certainly, though at this point you're probably better informed on it that I am, as I thought the dust had pretty much settled, and like most internet scandals nothing really happened.

And honestly, the fact that I'm coming down on the anti-GG side is surprising, as I don't like the vast majority of their large figureheads. I don't doubt that both sides are doing unethical things and that GG thinks they're protecting gaming, but in the end they're being misogynistic and doing everything right to make sure that gaming stays a small, socially unacceptable niche interest. As far as misbehaving gos on the anti-GG side of things, the fact that doxxing is common as is poorly thought out arguments shouldn't really be a surprise, given the following that Sarkeesian and others draw, aka the Tumblr feminists. These are the people that make SJW a slur and just generally make an ass out of themselves and any movement they think they're trying to help.

So I guess why I'm more pro anti-GG instead of sticking to the GG gamer side is as follows:

  A) Their stated cause is BS. There isn't really this vast conspiracy of buying off video game journalists and the fact that they still claim it's an ethics fight just shows that it's an excuse at this point.

  B) While I think a lot of the complaints about sexism in video games is fairly shallow and especially in Sarkeesian's case is finding evidence to fit a hypothesis there is rampant misogyny in and around video games. Things have definitely come a long way, but there is still a massive amount of work that needs to be done. This goes double for the communities. It's an unfortunate fact that the female portion of gamers is a much smaller percentage of total gamers, but they're very often the most likely to receive both "negative" harassment (what you normally think of) and "positive" harassment ("ZOMG you're a girl?! Wanna go out?! I didn't think girls exist on the internet!" and that sort of thing).
So both sides are filled with horrible people that I don't like, but one is effectively a fight for greater egalitarianism in games, while the other is a fight for the status quo.

Can you expand on what you're actually trying to do? I'm having trouble parsing your first sentence.

As far as switching to Python, I know one of my old professors working on big data stuff really liked it, so there's at least that endorsement. Unfortunately I can give more than that. I like my languages statically typed.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are you working on today?

It was built in-house, so I can't actually name it, but it's essentially a layer that exposes some Java methods, while leaving what actual network protocol to be used up to the infrastructure/sysops teams. I'm pretty much just pulling levers in Java to make it jump through my hoops. A step up from CORBA, but like all new things it's having trouble gaining traction.

This looks interesting! I'm about to clock out, but I'll try to remember to take a closer look once I'm home.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are you working on today?

Yeah, the joint ownership was what I was trying to get across. And setting up a simple proxy that logs who does what shouldn't be too hard, that way you don't have to add hooks to what's already there and can have it all in a central place.

And nightly backups of the server shouldn't be too much of a pain and that way even if a troll does muck things up your students only lost a few hours of work.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Apple Music is a nightmare and I’m done with it

No, I definitely agree with you. I stopped using Pandora something like a decade ago, but at my fiancée's work they have a business account so she got reacquainted with it and it's definitely better as far as algorithmic playlists go. Still can't compare to a curated list, but definitely better.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are you working on today?

Ah, yeah, I don't know how to really help there. If you figure out how to stop griefing you'll be able to retire rich.

Best I can figure is to make it one large, module thing, witch each team working on one part, that way they're not competing, hopefully reducing some of the grief.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are you working on today?

I wish you luck! Back when I was deciding what to go to college for, going into the diplomatic core was really high on my list.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are you working on today?

It can become addicting. Just make sure to pace yourself and make sure you've got a handle on what they're covering in each lesson. Additionally, there will be some pretty boring parts, but work through it and before you know it you'll be able to do things you've never dreamed of!

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are you working on today?

There's several ways to keep them seperated from each other. I'm not sure what all your set up looks like, but if you're running Linux just keeping them as unprivileged users should be pretty effective at keeping them from tredding on each other's toes. As far as your server set up goes, I'm not familiar with Spigot servers, but if RaspberryJuice isn't too memory intensive you can have several versions running, listening on different ports, that way they can even send and see their stuff without having to wait in line.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Lil's Book of Questions: What Do You Need in a Relationship?

Yeah, I agree, and think it's one of the hardest parts in a relationship. It's so easy to view your SO or even platonic friend as a crutch, something to fill a void you have. It's very hard to be able to self reflect and see what you have to offer, and if able, see what you're fulfilling for the other person.

It was when I first joined hubski, I read a comment about how friendship is a give and take, sometimes someone is all give and can switch to all take, but there is this push and pull and it's stuck with me, one of those "Ah ha!" moments. It's been rattling around my head and it seems to fit in with this.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Lil's Book of Questions: What Do You Need in a Relationship?

Yeah, we went over this back in my high school AP Psychology class like a decade ago, so my memory might be fuzzy, but it really did seem to fit well. And I think it's important to note that you're unlikely to have one language, but value certain languages above others.

And it's useful to find out which languages your SO prefers, as I've had relationships where we were feeling unloved, only to find out that we were showing our love the way we understood it, instead of how the other did.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Apple Music is a nightmare and I’m done with it

Honestly around 75% of the time Pandora's playlists are actually pretty good. It'll never be as good as an actual human curated list (one of the best parts of Spotify is how many there are).

I honestly haven't given Apple Music a shot. Long ago I realized that Apple only cares about experience on anything that's not a Mac.

I'm butting up against my mobile data limit, so I'll have to wait until I get home to listen. And I readily admit that there are still bands that carry on the torch. I guess I really just feel that the term has been diluted to the point of being meaningless for conveying what to expect.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Apple Music is a nightmare and I’m done with it

I've heard complaints against Spotify's library, but I've petty much only found really fairly obscure stuff to not really be there (excluding T Swift's infamous exodus).

My main complaint with Spotify is their terrible autogenerated playlists. Other than that it's definitely the main place I listen to music and has effectively ended my music piracy.

My guess is because they're one of the major players in international finance, with the other players either being big enough it's not super noticeable or small enough you can't tell it's not hitting the countries that surround them.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Google criticises US rules on finding software bugs

In general I agree with pretty much all your points, but I can't help but feel cynical that the political horse trading that goes on would effectively bar most experts from sitting on comities that they could bring insight to.

What I think would be a more workable, but probably just as easily corruptible solution, would be lawmakers directly employing experts. This would hopefully make them more beholden to give good a advice instead of just following a lobbyist agenda, though I'm sure that's just wishful thinking on my part.

I also really like umami.

I'm pretty sure the word you're looking for is maturity. I've never been a huge fan of her music or of celebrity worship, but as the article pointed out she's got a way of going viral and every time she does, it's in a positive light and every time it seems less like a child and more like a role model.

Unfortunately I don't really have any documented sources, but living in Chicago and talking to the service industry workers that he's interacted with, most of them have described him as a self-entitled asshole. It very well could be that the very self selecting group I've heard from just doesn't like him/caught him on a bad day.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Arkham Knight’s Big Problem: Female Representation [spoilers]

I mostly glossed over the later part, where both sides were harassing, only dedicating one line to it. I know that the rad SJW side of the internet is very experienced with doxxing and definitely did it through out gamergate, but I wanted to make it clear that it was in retaliation and that neither side was innocent once it started to blow up.

Unfortunately I'm not super familiar with most of the figures that took part, but I'm pretty sure that Brianna Wu is another indie game developer who came out in support of Quin, saying that she had also been othered by the gaming community, which lead to death threats and her being almost as much of a focus as Quin.

As far as Anita Sarkeesian goes, as much as I dislike her as a critic and a person, she actually did deliver on those review videos, it just took her a year longer than she said it would, and was silent to the criticism that she took the money and ran. They're up on her YouTube channel if you're interested in seeing what she has to say.

psudo  ·  3198 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Arkham Knight’s Big Problem: Female Representation [spoilers]

This is going to be long, rambling, and unsourced, so take it with a gain of salt, but here's the gist of it:

Zoe Quin is a female indie game maker who focuses on experimental games that explore very non mainstream topics. The game that seemed to thrust her into the spot light is a browser game about depression. It got favourable reviews, which seemed to have seriously annoyed the part of the internet that thinks death threats are a valid way of expressing dissent.

Then her ex posted a rambling essay that accused her of having a relationship with one of the game journalists that gave her a good review. This was proven to be false, but gave the trolls that hated her a convenient rallying cry "ethics in game journalism."

Others became targets and polarizing figures joined, probably making it worse, unintendedly. It rapidly grew to become extremely misogynistic and escalated to scum from all sides to treat it like a holy war and just generally make a mess of the gaming community.

I'm sure there are people in the gamergate side that really thought it was about ethics, but digging deeper it really seems to be misogynistic in nature and an attempt to silence nonstandard games, those that make them, and those that support it.
