Are... are you talking about Sturgis? Like it’s some little outdoor picnic? As a major tourist event it’s a hell of a lot more than that and closing the American border before it happened is likely what kept provinces like Manitoba from having much of a first wave.

Large stores are... large. Small businesses suffered, because they don’t have the space to operate. A cafe in my town used part of the sidewalk/parking lot to take orders. And seriously, let’s not pretend conservatives haven’t been having their own protests without any issue from the cops. Half the time it seems like they’re on their side. If you’re upset about the idea of church’s not holding service, then say that. Don’t try to call Sturgis “some rally” in hopes none of us would know what it was. Some of us listened to people getting very angry at the idea it was just some rally they could miss.

Ya for me it’s a fear of not being able to live up to expectations, because every expectation anybody has had of me didn’t take into account that I was dyslexic. It always looks like laziness for some reason, I think that’s why perfectionism has to be pointed out by other people. Like I have a great picture in my head of what I want to do, but completely lack the tools to get there. The perfectionism comes in when I am given the tools to do something, meet or exceed the expectation and then still feel like I must be falling short. I started a new job recently and every single time I’ve been asked how I felt about my own performance at work I’ve been told to not be so hard on my self and it’s like...oh? You want me to relax? Meanwhile in my head I thought I picked this super small thing to fix and was super nice to myself. I’ve been looking for books lately on this, if I find a good one I’ll make sure to recommend it.

Perfectionism is such a weird thing to accept. I’ve got that crippling kind of perfectionism were I just don’t do anything, because I’ve decided in my head that I’m not actually as smart as people think. It feels weird to call that perfectionism, but very worth looking deeper into.

Dude, that’s like saying the Teletubbies biggest lose was fans under 7. They’re still the reason they exist.

That statement reeks of privileged white male that doesn’t give a damn about anybody but himself. Truthfully that’s what this election solidified for me. That nearly half of Americans are self serving assholes who are willing to support a coworker or boss that bullies coworkers as long as it isn’t them.

In every other situation you can try to swing it differently, but here it is laid out for the world to see. You can’t blame low voter turnout, or ignorance anymore. Nearly half of Americans watched what he did for 4 years and still voted for him, because they couldn’t give a damn about anybody else in the country.

Oh except the troops of course, the ones who get welcomed home with glitter and cheers before promptly having the door shut in their face at every turn.

Ya I feel like this should be evidence that he likes to hang around situations and wait for his chance to fight while skirting the consequences because he “didn’t start it”. Like tall chick was trying to back away and this group of thugs kept following her. Then beat her up when she tried to defend herself from crazy short chick. But again, people will try to villainize the random tall chick.

I had to serve a Trump supporter the other day and we all wanted to ask if they were in the country legally but you can only really call on license plates. But then this guy went and tried to order butter chicken before actually ordering a burger. I was very confused until I was reminded that American’s sometimes think butter chicken is just chicken soaked in butter and THEN THEY ORDER IT. So suffice it to say, I don’t have a lot of faith in a positive outcome to this whole situation.

I love that the evidence that this is him is a pair of American flag crocs. Beats on a woman who’s just defending herself from that short girl, apparently Kyle doesn’t support everybody defending themselves.

Sounds very social media, but with strangers. Like when Instagram first launched and you where shown a page of popular accounts you might like to follow. I don’t know much about coding, but is it possible to have suggested tags in addition to the ability for people to input their own based off a link or text somebody adds to their post ? I think that might help people understand better what tags to include so content is seen, especially for new users just starting to share posts.

Like, here’s some suggested tags users are currently following that will make your post more visible.

oyster  ·  1330 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Kenosha Shooting Suspect Was In The Front Row Of A Trump Rally In January

America doesn’t have a violence in the media problem, it has a hero worship problem. It’s weird AF to people in every other country how you guys worship law enforcement, and vets to the extent you do. It’s cringe because in America appreciating vets is theatrics. This kid went to that place because he worshipped law enforcement, ran around trying to get their attention and now he’s going to get the shit kick out of him in jail. People joined up after 9/11 because of hero worship, got all messed up and returned to pretty thank you signs followed by a swift kick to the curb.

They’ve already said the studies don’t back up that violence in the media caused this, so look at the same situation and consider what else could be the issue. Hero worship is a strong contender, but it has nothing to do with the violence. If anything it pushes the violence out of mind.

Ya dude I’m ranting.

oyster  ·  1331 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Suspect Charged With Murder After 2 Shot Dead At Kenosha Protest

Like fuck. Then you read that they suspected him of already firing and I’m reminded of every other American shooting where people were such hero’s for trying to go after the gunman. But these people “attacked” an active shooter ? Are you fucking kidding me ? Oh it wasn’t him shooting ? He was just with that group ? Kind of like how he shot into a group of people and could have easily hit people who weren’t posing any threat to him ? The people this guy just disregarded as dumbasses and tossed aside like trash. I don’t even agree with the pointlessness of the prison system but damn lock this one up.

oyster  ·  1331 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Suspect Charged With Murder After 2 Shot Dead At Kenosha Protest

A 17 year old who goes out of his way to bring a gun to an event where he fully intends to use it doesn’t belong in society and should be locked up. Mad school shooter vibes going on here. We act like other people are asking for it by just existing while this white kid crossed state lines, put himself in this situation and your dumb country still calls this self defence ?

This town didn’t mean anything to this kid, why the hell does a 17 year old in another state care about a grocery store here ? Because shooting up schools is too predictable for these white boys nowadays.

If you’re looking at taking any kind of college level certificate or diploma stuff they doubled the grants you can receive for this year ! So usually a full time student can qualify for $3000 in grants when they apply for Canadian student loans but now it’s $6000. It’s paying for both my semesters fully so I’m pretty damn stocked.

I’m skeptical, this might work for your average Dutch white guy, but throw thick hair into the mix and it falls apart. They mention this working for long hair with an adjustment and I still think they’re out of touch. oyster  ·  1368 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The tourism industry is closed; let’s keep it that way

As someone who works in tourism and makes bank the author here is pretty out of touch with the bigger picture. American tourists are great, they tip more than anybody else. I can’t stand smug European or Australian tourists who act like their culture is better than everybody’s since they don’t. Obviously that’s not everybody, but it’s annoying when they don’t even realize their attitude sucks. It sounds like this author just wanted to rip on Americans.

It’s just like, why go with everybody in the industry is underpaid and then slag on Americans the people who will throw money at you if that’s your countries thing. It’s also crap, because as someone in the industry I know how much somebody can make working on cruise ships and it’s not peanuts. What experience does this person have ? Do they know what people working for this company make or are they just assuming ?

There’s a valid conversation about limiting tourism so the places are actually enjoyable again, but this article went in such a weird direction.

oyster  ·  1395 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Unintended Consequence; I'm getting a raise

Isn’t there still a backlog of applications from people who actually need the money ? Doesn’t seem right to add more applications and cause further delays for those in need.

You’re correct, most illegal firearms come from the states and these changes don’t address that in any way so imo it’s just lip service.

Gun control in Canada and probably most countries isn’t cohesive, it’s a bunch of half-assed policies piled on top of each other that leave a ton of gaps to exploit while simply creating a headache because nobody has the guts to actually just say the whole thing is getting ridiculous. Everybody ends up coming across as stupid because you can’t just fix it by making changes here and there. When your main point is that hunters don’t need these guns maybe don’t make a concession for indigenous hunters to keep using them. This applies to some non-restricted firearms that have become prohibited. So up until now once they left the store with the original owner there was 0 tracking of who had that firearm. This didn’t make it harder to purchase a firearm, non restricted firearms still exist. It’s actually pretty easy in Canada.

You get your PAL which takes time and goes through all the checks that people like. You get a number and if you want to buy a non restricted firearm from another private citizen you tell them your number, they should call to make sure it’s good and matches what you’re saying ( it is illegal to sell to anybody who doesn’t have a PAL, but there’s no check here to make sure people aren’t getting to relaxed on this ) then you proceed like any sale. If you’re buying from somebody online they wrap it up nicely and ship it Canada Post like anything else. A while back I mentioned that on here and it surprised some American gun owners. Restricted firearms are similar except you have to change the registration to the new owner ( you can call to do this ) before you mail it.

We still have guns we don’t track the ownership of, and we didn’t do anything about the American border. The only thing that really happened was a headache was created for a bunch of gun owners who become one issue voters in the next election, because as easily as this was done it can be undone by the next government.

This Liberal government was the one who said gun classification shouldn’t be politicized when they introduced Bill C-71

"After the definitions have been set in law by Parliament, it should be firearms experts who make the technical determination as to which firearm fits into which category. That is a factual, technical function, and it should not be politicized. Bill C-71 makes that point very clear," Goodale said.

The Liberals say that, under Harper, cabinet was able to "contradict the experts" and assign a lower category to a particular firearm. Those opposed to C-71 say the government is abdicating its legislative responsibilities by allowing police to make these choices without political approval.

Seems pretty politicized to me.

"As of today, the market for assault weapons in Canada is closed," Public Safety Minister Bill Blair said. “

For now, this got done easily and it will get undone easily when the conservatives find a more charismatic leader. Canada lacks any meaningful gun control imo

I’ve been thinking the same thing, but as someone in the tourism industry this is also wishful thinking. Travel will be cheap at least in some parts of Canada so I’m hoping all the people who continued to work but had to be cooped up at home will take advantage of that.

oyster  ·  1472 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Pubski: April 8, 2020

Life is good. Applied for my benefits today in Canada and they simplified the hell out of it. You literally just promise them you’re eligible and they warn you that they’ll get the money back if you’re lying. Took all of 3 minutes with a bad internet connection. They made that process so easy they’re probably saving money at the end of the day by cutting out 99% of the process.

On another note I decided a while back that I would try microdosing mushroom when I had some time off work and well the universe provided. Gotta find those silver linings people.

oyster  ·  1473 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Back of a napkin COVID-19 calculations

My understanding was it could go bad fast in India mainly among poorer communities like you mention.

I’m optimistic with the news I hear out of Canada. We’ve got companies retooling to produce masks and face shields among other things. The first should be ready to make 100 000 daily in a week. I saw another story that we’re starting a trial using plasma from people who have recovered to treat people who are currently sick. I’ll try to find these articles again, I’m trying to look at the more positive stuff lately.

I’m getting ready for a couple more months of this, but I’m hoping once we pass the peak all those companies making masks and hand sanitizer can start distributing to the general population so we can get out a little sooner.

oyster  ·  1473 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Back of a napkin COVID-19 calculations

From what I’ve gathered,

Italy has an older population, more people in the high risk age group = more deaths.

A lot of the original cases in India involved Italian tourists, so they’re a bit behind at the moment which explains the lower numbers. Not sure if this is a busy or slow time in India for tourism which is something else that would affect things. The other thing is, a lot of these countries can take extreme measures early on without worrying about backlash. Take a look at Taiwan, they’re doing great and considering their ties with China that seems impossible until you take into account that they can openly track citizens location via their cell phone. India can also heavily restrict movement without worrying about loosing an election.

Last thing, and this isn’t to be rude, but the culture in the states is very individualistic. The numbers are high, because in an individualistic culture people are less likely to sacrifice for the group. The common themes of all these measures to slow the spread are about working together and sacrificing to help others. Cancelling your spring break beach trip, closing your business, and otherwise inconveniencing yourself for others isn’t characteristic of individualistic cultures. Every culture has pros and cons, this is a time when collectivist cultures shine a little brighter.
