The amount of willfully obtuse white people in here is staggering. Did anyone engage with the secondary sources the author provided? Or would we rather be upset that maybe some of the things we take for granted might be at the expense of marginalized groups? Jeez laweez...

This is almost the definition of pure evil. Why aren't people like this confronted with the reality of their evil every possible chance? I mean, Paul Ryan's life's work is making sure poor people suffer as much as possible.

nothingleftinside  ·  2658 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: FBI backs CIA view that Russia intervened to help Trump win election

For real. WaPo is being super shady about all of this, especially this article that makes it seem like the FBI and CIA have a consensus about Russia trying to get Trump elected, when in fact it does not say that and eventually hinges on some flimsy source.

Apple has been making it harder and harder for me to find the root of my filesystem on their OS for years. No wonder people don't know how to do this.

And god forbid I want to manage the files on my god damn iPhone.

Those of us in the audio community continue to be furious at this change. How is 3.5mm not thin enough for these people! It used to be a quarter inch and we slimmed that down for you in the 80s!

I don't understand why this is such a big deal. Because he admitted it? Mod edits have been around as long as there have been BBS as far as I was aware (I first got online in 98). He's the site admin. I assume every post I ever write on any website can be altered.

nothingleftinside  ·  2686 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Farewell, America

It doesn't seem to me that Trump voters have anti-elite or pro-poor attitudes based on who they voted for. I just feel like we're beyond the point of compromise. One side is amenable to reason and understand facts; the other is entrenched and "post-truth". I've been hoping for (and calling for) my entire adult life a presidential candidate who's primary issue is poverty. The last time we had that was Jimmy Carter (I think, I wasn't alive). I was very pro-John Edwards in 2008 because that was his signature issue. I dunno. With republican congresses, I have no idea how any positive legislation is going to get passed ever. I'm frustrated to the point of revolt.

nothingleftinside  ·  2688 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Let Them Eat Facts: Why Fact Checking Is Mostly Useless In Convincing Voters

I have come to realize that my thing that I refuse to believe after being presented evidence is that people won't believe things when they are presented evidence. I've seen it on the internet for sure, but I have never run in to it in person if I can remember. I've had my view changed in a conversation; I've seen people's view changed when presented with evidence IRL, but it's hard for me to believe someone adamantly refusing in the face of something stark.

Both places I've lived the climate is noticeably different than it was decades ago. I lived in Florida for a long time and weather has been getting stranger there for at least 10-15 years.

nothingleftinside  ·  2688 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The racist foundation of the modern Republican party

I'm curious, can you mention any programs that lead to "more government" or that didn't involve financial incentives that haven't worked? I can't think of any.

nothingleftinside  ·  2690 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The racist foundation of the modern Republican party

My hypothesis is that they "choose" the most hurtful arenas because they actually hate other people- they get some sort of satisfaction knowing they are getting something other people aren't or are "sticking it" to certain sectors of society. It sounds ridiculous but I'm starting to believe it more and more every day.

nothingleftinside  ·  2690 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: 6 minute slap in the face from a fellow liberal, courtesy Totalbiscuit

Because they effect everybody, rather than certain classes. Also, everyone is pretty much on the same side with those issues. Everyone wants the economy to be doing well, not everyone wants abortion to be legal.

nothingleftinside  ·  2690 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Farewell, America

We've been trying for generations. They just elected a literal fascist who has literal white supremacists in his inner circle. They're going to completely destroy the EPA and actively accelerate climate change. The gloves need to come off.

nothingleftinside  ·  2690 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The racist foundation of the modern Republican party

At this point, I can't imagine what a real republican party might look like. Isolationist foreign policy and protectionist international trade practices? Trump has promised those things in one way or another. but I don't see the rank and file adopting this any time soon. I know the more reasonable among them have wanted immigration reform for some time now (Bush II's signature issue, until 9/11). But what that plan was has been adopted by modern democrats, and all we hear now is round em up and build a wall. How would a "compassionate" conservative deal with entitlements? Obamacare is the republican compromise for national health insurance, but again, this party has been radicalized to the point where they all want to repeal it. You'd think the so called conservative party would be very very concerned about climate change, and would use national funds and resources to create an infrastructure for the private sector to address energy concerns and modernize industries to be carbon neutral. Conservatives love tax incentives and enterprise. But no. We just get whining. I want a real conservative party to discuss reasonable solutions with. We are left with five year olds instead.

Us audio engineers are going to be out of a job soon! ;-P

They need to bring these people, with all their warts, into the fold.

No. No warts. No racism, no homphobia, no xenophobia, no poor shaming, no science-denying, no anti-education stances. That is the most prescient divide here. Yes, it's partially economics, but it's these very very important things that are at stake here. If these attitudes can't be changed, these people can fuck off. Let them starve and not know why. So far, they have been fractious in the face of any reasonable discussion or compromise.

nothingleftinside  ·  2693 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: 6 minute slap in the face from a fellow liberal, courtesy Totalbiscuit

I think the Left should give up its preoccupation with guns.

Hear hear. Each side needs to start dropping their wedge issues. Guns, immigration, abortion, LGBT issues, etc. We need to focus on the ones that common people can reach accord on- namely the economy and climate change.

nothingleftinside  ·  2695 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: President Donald Trump.

I still don't completely buy it. The numbers don't add up. There is simply no evidence that these voters are any more economically disadvantaged than the rest of society- the opposite is true in fact. There is only one common thread between them all- intense fear of immigrants and distrust of institutions. All of the problems you described apply to urbanites just as much. In fact, urban unemployment is worse. The whole thing is a myth.

nothingleftinside  ·  2695 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: DON'T PANIC

I don't know why someone wouldn't fall in to the latter. You heard what the man said, You heard what his policies are. It's fascism, and he is a fascist. His voters support fascist policies.

nothingleftinside  ·  2696 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: President Donald Trump.

What do you mean by left behind? I keep hearing this on the news about the rural vote and how they feel disenfranchised. What exactly do they want? Who took what away from them? Why is now not as great as before? A lot of people say the economy, but wages are finally growing again, unemployment is down, and the economy is finally going in a positive direction after being wrecked for about 15 years. The median income for Trump voters is $72,000. I'm a big city college educated liberal and I will probably never have an income that high as long as I live. Don't tell me it's the economy. It's xenophobia, plain and simple.

nothingleftinside  ·  2763 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Myth of Millenial as Cultural Rebel

The regular groaning about articles like this aside, a new thing that I see is that we "don't aspire to steady jobs." Bullshit. There are no steady jobs! We don't get benefits, we don't get raises. The only way for us to get any kind of income increase is to find another job that will hopefully pay us more than the last one. I hate gig work. I want a steady paycheck. I want affordable healthcare. I want to be able to save for retirement. I want to make a higher effective wage than I did last year. What the hell is wrong with the people who write these articles?

I really don't think so. Check out what the times says:

And although 538 has Trump edging out in their "now" cast; that's the least predictive of any of their forecasts:
