It's funny you should mention that since the most common stereotype I heard while working in food and bev (in the US) was "Europeans don't tip." I never noticed any trends with any so-called groups, but I also never focused on it.

cgod is right about tip income being taxed as I knew several waiters who were audited by the IRS. This was in the 90s so hopefully they have moved on to bigger fish.

Cool find; 8 out of 10 based on Joyce knowledge.

Love Warpaint and never tire of The Breeders' Safari.

Reminds me of when Bowie released Never Let Me Down.

If I had asked a family member this question, "The Beatles" would be the answer.

Agreed...now I'm thinking Sam Cooke as well.

There's no such thing as a wrong answer here.

Truly a beautiful song.

marston  ·  4093 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Mind-blowing literature?

Borges Labyrinths, Cortazar's Blow Up and Other Stories, and DeLillio's Americana, all left me seeing the world if not literature in a completely new light.

I personally have a preference for Camus' The Plague.

marston  ·  4134 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are your five favourite films, and why?

In no particular order:

Psycho: I've lost track of how many times I've seen this film. The noir vibe, the strong performances, great soundtrack and Hitchcock's manipulation of the audience make me keep coming back to this film.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: The chemistry between Newman and Redford is amazing. I love the soundtrack and it's a beautifully shot and edited film.

Miller's Crossing: Gabriel Byrne's Tom Reagan is my favorite anti-hero. Also, it has a great soundtrack, cinematography and performances (esp. Turturro and Harden).

In the Mood for Love: I feel that every frame of this film is a feast for the eyes.

Reservoir Dogs: This was the first movie I saw in the theater that I immediately wanted to watch again.

marston  ·  4134 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: How do you use other social media?

Facebook: I have an account but do not use it. Twitter: Use it as a newsfeed, but I'm very inconsistent with it. YouTube: I have only recently started to subscribe to channels (mainly music). Reddit: Outside of a couple of subreddits, I just use it as a time waster.
