As hard as everything still is, I'm glad for your wife's improved state. That was an emotionally terrifying read. Hope things keep incrementally (or more) improving.

ecib  ·  1269 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The only Trump health update that is relevant:

My mother in law had it. Had symptoms for about a week, felt crappy so went to hospital. They admitted her, she stayed overnight then insisted they let her go back home, which they did. Within 48 hours she drove herself to the ER and checked herself back in, then declined rapidly. Ultimately she ended up on the brink where they thought she wasn't going to make it, and pulled back at the last moment, almost a month in. Another anecdote but I've heard quite a few of them like that now. Statistically he's going to make it, but lets just say I wouldn't be surprised if he suddenly tanks.

Was in Seattle for a day and walked into one of those Amazon stores without cashiers with a buddy of mine, grabbed some gum, and walked out.

Instantly clear to me that nobody will ever walk into a store with cashiers again if they have the option to do this instead.

I can’t speak to how deeply this tech will penetrate on what timeframe, just that if you can, you will.

Yes it's a terrible title. But it is quite fascinating. I was at a talk recently by the founder of Rigetti, who is building quantum computers. We are a LOT closer to a paradigm shift in processing power than I had thought.

The convergence of these technologies is going to be quite amazing.

Thanks for your insight AnSionnachRua.

Pretty cool that you've kind of got a "stop-motion" view of the site over time, and that the quality (in your view) has remained through each snapshot :)

ecib  ·  3051 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: 3 Questions with @coffeesp00ns

coffeesp00ns, the way you described your endeavors with classical music sounds very Sisyphean. How do you break that circle? My guess is simply creating your own music on your own terms outside of that framework and enjoying the fact that you're that much better at it because of the skill and training that informs you...but maybe it's something else?

How is this for a new Hubski UI?

ecib  ·  3153 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski Update: A pre-update PSA

While I welcome the change, I do not think this will bring any additional accountability at all. It's a minor feature whose presence isn't apparent to most users, and aside from those paying attention to this post, most users will probably not be cognizant of how it works vs the old way.

IMHO, we have to rely on other mechanisms for quality posts.

ecib  ·  3154 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: I opened my coffee shop yesterday...

First of all, congratulations. This post makes me incredibly happy brother.

I'm looking forward to talking with you more about it as time goes on.

I don't know what else to say. I'm looking at 70 hour work weeks for at least a month.

I predict more :)

A guy who owns a coffee shop told me that it should take me about three years to make enough money to do all the things I want to do to the shop and enjoy any money that I might be making,

Not sure how well it maps, but this is precisely in line with my wife's retail shop.

There are many ways in which I think my shop is lame right now.

Just today I was installing some security systems in the shop and M said "If I had a fucking week to close down and hole up in here, I would transform this fucking place into the coolest fucking shop on the planet that would blow everybody's mind." Worth noting that her customers already think it is, but she is never satisfied with the status quo and intimately aware of every tiny place it falls short in her eyes.

Life goals: Sit at cgod's counter and have him make me an espresso. Luckily this is an easy one.

ecib  ·  3319 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Pubski: February 25, 2015

The past three weeks have been INSANELY busy, much more than I anticipated. A couple weeks ago I estimated and sent out some bids on some very large project at my office. Last week I switched to a "working vacation" out West to fill 6 months worth of open-to-buys with my wife for her store. It was a tough one this time to fill all the OTBs with things we were happy with (but we did it). While there I found out I probably won both jobs which represent probably 20% of our business for the year, and have been tweaking numbers and spreadsheets non-stop since then to button things up and lock them down.

Still have a bit more to do today but I feel like I'm out of the woods with the one finished up and the easier one left to do, but any relief I'd have felt shall be postponed as my boss signed me up to give a presentation and sit on a panel in front of a few hundred peeps at a tech conference hosted by one of our bigger clients on Friday:

ecib: "Setting aside the fact that I hate public speaking, what exactly is this conference about and what is my role to be?

boss: "Not sure. They wanted us to present something and I just said "yeah" and signed you up. You know more about this stuff than me."

ecib: "..."

boss: "It'll be fine, just sit up there and say smart things."

ecib: "Not cool at all dude."

The presentation is Friday, I've been out of town for a week, and one of my biggest pet peeves is having to speak to a group where I don't feel 1000% prepared to deliver on the topic. I still don't have any details other than a general theme (technology in k12 education).

So my brain is already deeply fried, and I've got to wing this presentation (which will be fine frankly, but I won't be at ease till it's over). I rarely feel this way, but this is one week were I'll be looking forwards to Saturday.

It's all good though :D

Oh I see. Religious nut. For him, the left are inherently evil creatures by nature. Makes sense now.

Saddned to see that this guy is not fringe and is totally serious.

Prager states that the United States is engaged in a culture war over the fundamental moral values on which American society was built.[7] He argues that influential institutions including universities, labor unions, the American Civil Liberties Union, civil rights groups, as well as trial lawyers and most large newspapers and television networks are dominated by "secular leftists".

Holy shit he sees universities, civil rights groups, and labor unions literally as playgrounds of the Devil. How pernicious.

But according to the it's-all-a-matter-of-perceptions view, there is no moral truth, only black perceptions and white perceptions. This all accords with the left's views of truth and morality.

And, of course, for the left there is no moral truth. Morality is entirely subjective. "Good" and "evil" are individual or societal preferences. No more, no less.

What the actual fuck is this guy smoking?

I'm going to go ahead and assume that the average conservative does not think this about the left, because I can't imagine that they could all be that ignorant and divorced from reality.

Is this guy an actual well read and respected conservative or is he more of a Glenn Beck or Anne Coulter conservative entertainment troll? Really hoping (for conservative's sake) it's the latter...

ecib  ·  3462 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Do Raves Still Happen?

I'll be damned if I can add anything to that brilliant recount.

Pan to my aftermath:

Sunday evening. Living room. I quietly read my novel on the couch as my father, ECIB THE FIRST, County Prosecutor, soaks his aching feet in a basin with bath salts, listlessly flipping through channels and settling inevitably on the local evening news.

Cut to a commercial as the anchor teases: "SEX, DRUGS AND UNDERAGE TEENS AT ILLEGAL UNDERGROUND PARTIES IN DETROIT. A RAVE IS RAIDED AND CHANNEL 7 IS RIGHT THERE. WE'LL TELL YOU WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS PHENOMENON WHEN WE COME BACK!"

ecib:

O_o

"Dad, you look reaaaaly tired"

ECIB THE FIRST: (Yawns slightly) "Hmmyeah. I guess I am."

ecib: "Mmm, yeah. You should just head to bed and get some rest. Want me to dump that water out for you?"

ECIB THE FIRST: "Yes, thank you. Well, I guess I'll see you in the morning, good night."

ecib: "Nite!"

ECIB THE FIRST heads up the stairs. I can still see his ankles slipping up from view as commercial break ends and the anchor barrels into the story leading with footage of me and cgod front and center with our hands behind our heads.

Probably the closest I've come to shitting my pants during my adolesence. Luckily my dad was a prosecutor for the neighboring county, so he never got wind of the dismissed ticket.

Btw, the city sent absolutely the most dickish letter (expertly intercepted of course) stating that the tickets were being dismissed "due to a technicality", the technicality being that we were not breaking the law we were given a ticket for.

Good times.

It was great meeting you blackbootz. Wish it could have been longer and I wish I didn't have to slam a Bloody Mary. I blame that on mk though (Not myself. Never myself).

I was going to ask you for a good Russian toast but I lost the thought in the conversation.

I called the FCC Chairman's office today to let them know what I thought and ask a few questions. They wouldn't comment on how or why the change happened, nor would they comment on how this would affect consumers and startups either financially/competitively, or equitably. Apparently the proposed rules will be voted on in May.

Fuck Obama. Seriously.

ecib  ·  3630 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski, have any of you tried lucid dreaming?

I've done a sort of variant I guess. It wasn't a lucid dream per se, but years ago when I was living in Boston I had got to thinking about nightmares and how it had been years since I'd had one. Since childhood really. I thought about how emotionally charged and frightening they were to have such an impact that they often forced you out of sleep.

I hypothesized that the reason I hadn't had one in so long was because I generally did not have much anxiety in my daily life. I don't know if that was the reason or not, but I decided I was going to change that.

I was going to give myself a nightmare.

So I committed to meditating each evening on the cusp of sleep, - really focusing on what few anxieties I did have and trying to imagine worst case scenarios playing out. I dwelt on morbid thoughts. I played Bone Machine by Tom Waits in the darkness. This went on for about a week and a half before I succeeded. I had the most mind-shattering terrifying fucking nightmare of my entire fucking life and it wasn't even close.

I literally woke up screaming. Full throat screaming. I won't go into the whole dream but it ended with me tripping on the stairs of my house in the darkness and landing on the top step, cheek to cheek with the warm severed head of my best friend in a plastic bag. I have to say though, I felt satisfied when I laid back down having accomplished my mission, and in such a big way.

ecib  ·  3646 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Brendan Eich steps down as Mozilla CEO

But that's pretty sad. The guy was forced to resign because he peacefully oppose gay marriage?

Not sad at all.

Eich was not qualified to be Mozilla's CEO. They are not a for-profit company existing to make money for shareholders. They are a non-profit organization existing to fulfill an innately social and ethical mission. Eich gave both his voice and tangible resources in the form of money to deny equal treatment under law to gay Americans. People within Mozilla and without rightly, in turn, voiced their opinion that he was not fit to hold the role of CEO for that reason. They were right.

Intolerance of intolerance isn't intolerance. Slowly but surely over the centuries our society is getting closer to giving equal treatment under law to all citizens...minorities, women, LBGT. We have a long way to go yet, but it isn't a sad day when a bigot doesn't get the high-profile job he wanted because because of his bigotry, not matter how civilly he wraps his words or frames his actions. It is right and good that people called him on this and the organization which exists for an ethical purpose recognized how unethical his actions were and his own refusal to justify them, and showed him the door. This has nothing to do with his 1st amendment rights or government censorship. He publicly held a stance and took certain actions that were deemed blatantly immoral by a large portion of the public and got called on.

Slavery removes agency in a system where the slave does not agree (while he/she still has agency) to release it under the terms of any compact.

ecib  ·  3681 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Well, Hubski, you failed. Now what? (NAS Update)

I am at a complete loss as to what one do for fun and profit with that much storage after backups/work and audio media is accounted for.

But here is this:

http://atp.fm/episodes/22-full-brichter

It's a podcast (called Accidental Tech Podcast) from some well known Apple devs (creator of Instapaper, back-end for Tumblr, and some other stuff) and writers. Topics vary, but in this one they basically geek out and do some lengthy coffee-talk about NAS options. If memory serves, this was also the first episode after Synology heard them geeking a bit on NAS a couple episodes before, and shipped at least one of them a unit to have out of the blue. They used it and ended up giving their first impressions on this podcast. Anyway, it sounds like this episode they are speaking from a similar place you're in now regarding your Synology gear, unless you've used their stuff for a while.

ecib  ·  3682 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Take a photo, RIGHT NOW.

Ever since I was a child I've been a night owl, and had a hell of a time waking up. In fact, mornings are sort of hell on Earth for me. Just wired that way.

Anyway, I was in Vegas with my wife on a buying trip for her store last week, and because our flight was delayed we arrived late and the room-type we booked was maxed for capacity so we got an upgrade to a nice corner-suite, with floor to ceiling windows on two walls, overlooking the Vegas Strip and the mountains of Nevada.

It was such a nice view that we just slept with the windows bare, and in the morning, the Sun rose sometime before 7am, flooding the room with a warm glow that turned brilliant as 7 approached. HOLY SHIT was it easy to wake up there. All that natural light just did something to my brain...I had to get up earlier there than normal, but I never had to use an alarm (I can find a snooze button from 300 yards in the dark normally). It was the most soothing, gentle, yet irrefutable call to wake I've ever experienced. Sort of bummed that I'm back in my soothing womb-cave.

Congrats on that. I put myself through school (along with Pell Grants, thank you America) partially with the help of what would become a maxed out credit card. When I paid it off, it was a great feeling. Next step: You can get the same feeling by dumping money into savings and investment accounts and doing compounded interest calculations :P
