It's tough because in the transition from web 1 to web 2 our public spaces shifted from protocols to companies.

Email is a protocol, but so is a sidewalk. I have sympathy for your view (shared it to some degree) but I'm becoming increasingly reticent to gatekeep our company-owned digital sidewalks until we figure out how to build them as protocols first.

Haha not really just thought this was a fascinating read psychologically. Particularly fascinating is just how dismissive he is of the causes of, and factions in the war that did that to them. They seem to melt away in importance compared to the outcomes they produced. You might need to add booze and smokes to your stockpile tho lol ;)

No way anyone is supporting a Mike pence coup.

I was thinking the opposite this afternoon, and that Trump dying could be the ultimate black swan.

What if he did, and suddenly all of the real Republicans holding their nose or refusing to vote Trump suddenly had no problem rushing back into the fold to elect a traditional conservative, while conservative independents no longer tilted in as large numbers to Biden.

aw missed it there! :P

Side note. The new Dune movie is going to have a tough time living up to the original. I personally don't think it's possible, but the trailer isn't bad.

ecib  ·  1378 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: New Work by Gary Larson

(SPOILER ALERT): Each one is better than the last. The first one is a classic absurdist Larson punchline, but you can tell he's still getting used to his digital tools. Feels like it would have looked better as one of his classic ink drawings. The second one is really funny, and the picture itself is beautiful. I feel like you could frame it as art, -it feels very atmospheric, alive, and "now". Actually like it better than a lot of his ink drawings. The third one initially hit me as the least funny because instead of a caption beneath the frame, there is a title, which kills the joke. If you just look at the scene ignoring the words beneath and it hits you what they're doing, that is downright hilarious, but it's supposed to dawn on you as you view it, -you shouldn't read it in the title. Ended up being funniest by far.

And suddenly, 25 years later:

Yeah, people are people. Call me crazy, but I don't feel like the answer to one of our collective vulnerabilities is to exploit it to the max :)

Maybe we should even take extra care that that not happen...

I think that might be framing it perhaps a bit too kindly. I don't think they're supporting this (and they are) in the name of freedom as much as in the name of engagement, unfortunately for us. Even beyond easy onboarding. They know these propaganda networks exist, and they want them there.

I do think though that when it comes to individual developers (who don't matter for the purpose of culpability here imho), you're right and you do get more of the "in the name of freedom" line, but even then...I bet a subset of those espousing philosophy find it is an incredibly convenient one morally... :)

Interesting paper that suggest dry or steam sterilization at 121 C might be a kind of sweet spot for making masks re-usable. One hospital reported that 134 C deformed the masks, which is not desirable for re-use, but the 121 temp had good results.

Hospitals have autoclaves and could do this. Even a clothes steamer with mask in baggie would work nicely, though dialing in the temp might be finicky. I've seen some folks suggest dry heat from rice cooker as well. Even a pressure cooker I bet could get good results.

I don’t think he’ll be charged with campaign finance law violations, not do I think he believes he will, thus motivating his behavior.

I do think that he cares more about his personal interests, and that alone is enough to motivate his actions. It’s not self preservation, -it’s ego imho.

I had a client years ago who aaaaaaaaaaaaalways wanted to go to Hooters for lunch on my company card.

It was such a bummer trying to pick out a single thing on the menu that I could remotely enjoy eating. Playboy actually had good articles. Hooters did not, in fact, have good wings. The absolute rock-bottom they could have done was tend to their pretense appropriately.

thenewgreen I can get you a used shipping container for a thousand bucks. It's on trend and really captures that raw, re-purposed vibe creators are so fond of. Problem solved.

I have not spoken to either of my parents since the election. I just can't.

I'm with you. My father voted for Trump. In the last few months it sorta breaks my heart to say this but I lost a lot of respect for him just...as a person. Not because he voted for Trump, but for the way in which he went about it. I got months of paranoid, angry, obnoxious, reality-challenged, gleeful ranting. I felt like I was talking to a misbehaving child from another planet. It's fucking sad.

I finally answered his texts this weekend...he wanted to do lunch and I said ok. He called the past couple days in a row and I just stared at the phone and didn't pick up. Such a weird feeling...just no part of me wanted to pick up. Like Bartleby by the Scrivener, I preferred not to.

Good luck with your ma.

I already donated to the ACLU in the wake of their open letter to Trump. I told my wife that I intend to look into volunteering for a House campaign in the run-up to midterm elections in two years as well. I intend to give both money and labor to oppose Trump, nearly everything he stands for, and his Republican lap dog enablers.

What a bummer. If I watch news at all on television it's usually PBS. Say what you will about the editorial slant, just the calm considered pace of their broadcasts are worth their weight in gold. So young too...

My ears are open, Hubski: what's your advice on living with someone y'also love? Is there any? I would be delighted, enchanted, and tickled to hear your thoughts.

You don't need any advice. Living with someone you love isn't something you have to figure out any sort of trick to navigate. It's how you figure out if you're actually compatible. It's a means not an end. If you can't live together it's not a failure but a realization imo.

ecib  ·  2761 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Presidential Debate Thread

Ah, yeah. So basically The birther movement began out of the alt-right and white nationalist movement here in the US. it was this massive years long smear campaign directed at the first black president that wasn't directed at other presidents. He was born in the US, there was never even a HINT of a suggestion that he wasn't, his state birth certificate was publicly available in short form, and he even released the long for version because of the conspiracy. All this is stuff that no white candidate was forced to do, not even ones like Ted Cruz, whom it is well known was actually born in Canada. It has as much to do with the people pushing the conspiracy as it does the asymmetrical standard applied to him. And again, even when he produced his long form birth certificate DJT continued to publicly push the notion that he wasn't American for years and years after.

At the end of the day, Paul Simon was an incredible writer, both exceedingly competent and prolific. Garfunkel was just one of many beautiful instruments. Both are to be lauded but the two are not the same thing.
