It's tough because in the transition from web 1 to web 2 our public spaces shifted from protocols to companies.

Email is a protocol, but so is a sidewalk. I have sympathy for your view (shared it to some degree) but I'm becoming increasingly reticent to gatekeep our company-owned digital sidewalks until we figure out how to build them as protocols first.

Critics inside and outside the company have said that Mr. Chappelle’s show, “The Closer,” promotes bigotry against transgender people.

I watched it before I was aware there was a controversy and came away with the exact opposite take, and actually found his bit to be more moral than the vast majority of comedy I’ve ever consumed.

I'm not good at it, but I've gotten better at it the more I've done it.

My method is this:

1. Start with a scientific paper, not a news article summarizing the paper. Scientific papers are laid out really nice, with an abstract that gives a simple overview, an introduction, conclusion, etc. The way they are structured and written, they provide a ton of context for terms that you don't understand, where an article will strip out the context providing insight to the term you don't understand, while overcompensating by explaining things at the "overview" or abstract level, which is not the problem you're really trying to solve.

2. Start with a paper on a subject you are super geeked and profoundly curious about. Like you are just climbing out of your skin to learn more. Not something you need to know more about for work or for school. Something that turns you on.

3. Read it on a computer, and literally do this: Each term you do not understand (this will likely occur in the first sentence, and there maybe several of these in the fist sentence and almost every sentence thereafter. Yup) you should highlight, right-click, and select "define" or "Search google" from the context menu. And....just read about that term. It will send you off on a tangent. You will spend a ton of time nowhere near the paper you are on, and each time you return to the next word, you'll not have made it past the sentence you're on, but 20 minutes will have past.

4. Rinse and repeat. Just keep knocking words down, one at a time. Oh also you won't fully grok each term before moving to the next one, but you'll start becoming familiar.

How I do it anyway.

My dad came over for coffee today. Due to a medical condition, he has a severely compromised immune system. He railed against our governor's mask mandate that was just overturned by our state Supreme Court (because it was issued by executive order) and repeated the GOP talking point that it was on him to wear a mask since he was the one who was older and more at risk.

It's taking all of my patience not to paint all Republicans with a broad brush.

ecib  ·  1466 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski, have any good news stories to share, no matter how small?

So my wife owns a women's clothing boutique, and everything is basically shut down due to Covid. It's a small business that carries a lot of seasonal inventory and pays a decent chunk in rent since she needs to be in a downtown corridor for the foot traffic.

In the midst of this, she's been posting and selling off of Instagram via DMs while her store is closed, and we spent yesterday morning and afternoon alone at the store packaging up purchases, adding in some free gifts and a handwritten notes, then driving around town leaving them on the buyer's doorstep.

And every single person who purchased something said the nicest things to my wife either directly or online after they got their items. My wife easily burst out crying 3 or 4 times yesterday from the love and support she's been getting from her customers. She just wants to take care of her ladies and make them feel great about themselves, and they've definitely returned the favor.

ecib  ·  1216 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Last Children of Down Syndrome

I'll say this.

A good friend of mine was a teacher for a decent stretch of time, and focused on teaching autistic children. She found it extremely rewarding but that's inconsequential and completely besides the point. She always had a lot to say about how happy and full the lives of her students were. I remember when my wife and I were looking at having a kid, and I was talking to her about my fears that at our age there was a higher probability of genetic issues resulting in things like Downs Syndrome. I will always remember the distinct lack of time that elapsed in her reply, coupled with her nakedly honest response asking why that would even matter, -that children with Down syndrome where just as awesome and capable of radical happiness as any other.

I still think about that jarring moment to this day.

I've been really enjoying my last couple evenings listening to some music recs from cgod.

It's late in life, but I'm happy I finally realized that when it comes to effortless weekday evening meals, boneless chicken thighs are one order of magnitude better than boneless chicken breasts, which are totally for basic bitches. I actually feel a bit foolish for not knowing this important truth years earlier but whatever I'm good now.

Unfortunately, expanded surveillance initiatives only flow in one direction historically. Bums me out that amidst a crisis like this there are a lot of cynics among the people that are supposed to be serving us that are using the crisis to further deteriorate our rights.

Haven't seen anything as egregious as what happened after 9/11 yet though.

ecib  ·  1268 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The only Trump health update that is relevant:

My mother in law had it. Had symptoms for about a week, felt crappy so went to hospital. They admitted her, she stayed overnight then insisted they let her go back home, which they did. Within 48 hours she drove herself to the ER and checked herself back in, then declined rapidly. Ultimately she ended up on the brink where they thought she wasn't going to make it, and pulled back at the last moment, almost a month in. Another anecdote but I've heard quite a few of them like that now. Statistically he's going to make it, but lets just say I wouldn't be surprised if he suddenly tanks.

Name: ecib

Location: Mitten

Current preoccupation: Always work!! Additionally, I'm beginning to grow cannabis, though I've never smoked, and don't currently plan to. Goal is to organically grow product for people I love who also consume, that has no pesticides or other unknown elements, and once I get proficient growing, create edible tinctures that lets them get a medical effect without smoking or vaping, both of which are terribly harmful. I'm on a podcast on this subject with a veteran grower, -I'll try and remember to link to it when it's up.

Previous preoccupations: Vacation? I don't see one on the horizon in 2019 but we'll see :P

Pubs are almost purpose-built for commiserating.

When you have given all you can to the point of breaking yourself, you have not failed her.

My wife's sister just died from cancer. She was in hospice for mere weeks, and between her husband, myself, my wife, my wife's sister, my wife's brother, and both of her parents, there weren't enough of us to give her all of the care she needed. We all gave her every bit of what we could. We were looking into a full time nurse right up till the end.

I'm sure you already are looking at it this way, but it's worth being mindful (meditating if you will) of the fact that in taking care of yourself, you'll be ensuring that you can take care of her to the best of your ability.

ecib  ·  909 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The River

Nice breakdown :)

To me, it doesn’t matter. When 50% (or whatever) of the “people” you are engaging with around a given topic do not exist and are paid propaganda channels, Something has gone wrong and “the deal” has been broken. Twitter is representing to me that these are people.

ButterflyEffect, not sure if you already have that $300 roaster, but I made instructions on how to quickly and easily mod a $20 popcorn popper to make a decent roaster:

If you're wondering if you'll dig it, might be worth dipping your toe in this way first. Cheap. Easy. Fun.

They changed the design of the popper I used in the tutorial, but not meaningfully. Same instructions should apply now.
