Looks awesome! I've been waiting for an invite but frankly I'm not sure it's my thing either. I'm interested but I'm not totally sure when I'd use it over Discord - maybe it's just demographic / audience differences? Looks like I'm more likely to find SV-types in Clubhouse?

Anyone who was going to ever stop believing in QAnon has surely done so by now right? After the past couple of months, I have to believe that anyone left with shakable faith in the Qlan has been shaken off. Those left must be the ones who have dig deep and attached themselves to Q to the point that they will follow every one of his pivots without the slightest hint of whiplash.

I hope so! My larger concern would be a single, super predator race. Ignoring human ideals and morals, surely the safest thing for a race that’s vastly ahead in technology wise when finding a younger race to do would be to just wipe them out, no? Why would they risk letting humanity catch up in technology and having diplomacy potentially fail? Hopefully they’re interested in observing or working with other life forms, but if they’re not in my mind them pressing the delete button is the obvious option.

I totally forgot about that bet! Still stunned he made it through to the end.

I'm afraid your complaints are falling on robotic ears.

I've been sick the past couple days, and I have to say; I'm not a fan. It's strange, having a valid reason to not get out of bed makes me hate lying here. On days where I wake up early in the morning go to work, I feel my bed calling out to me for just 5 more minutes; and now I wish to be anywhere else doing something productive.

I've got a lot more I'd like to share, but sitting up to type sucks right now. I'm going back to bed.

byonic  ·  2676 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Should I get a headhunter or what should I do about my career?

I think (or at least hope) that you're misunderstanding the headhunter fees. I'm not aware of any case where a headhunter will charge the candidate a fee, if you run into one who does that's a massive black flag and I'd avoid them like the plague.

While their commissions are generally based off of the candidate's starting salary, that's a fee paid by the company to the headhunter, and assuming no one's being shady, it will never come out of the salary itself. The way it's meant to work is that the commission is supposed to act as an incentive for the headhunter to negotiate for a higher starting salary for the candidate, and for the position to be filled faster for the hiring company. Of course, YMMV with how this applies in practice, as it depends on all of the parties involved.

The rest of your advice is solid! I just wanted to vouch for headhunters since I've had good experiences.

I seriously want #2. Is that your tattoo on the monitor?

Glad to hear it, friend. I just barely missed you on IRC. Hope to catch you sometime soon - I've got some thoughts about your thoughts, and a few of my own to bounce off you!

Solidarity.

I would move to Canada with y'all to escape this #trumpsterfire (shame that tag didn't get more use), but I promised myself I wouldn't move anywhere colder than Kansas since it's only October and I'm already too cold. Looks like the Netherlands is vaguely the same climate-wise, any Dutch Hubskiers want to take in an American refugee? Will program for food and housing ;)

On a more serious note, I'm probably not going to bail just yet. In fact, I'll take it a step further and say that I hope I'm proven wrong about Trump and the GOP who has control over the House and Senate. I hope he and his party make this country great (though I'm withholding the word 'again') somehow, even though I have no reason to expect them to. Is that wishful thinking? Me going numb to avoid the pain? Is there a difference?

In my limited experience, I've found the simplest meditation techniques to be the most effective. Though I'm certainly guilty of making the same mistakes, always thinking "I did this meditation, what's next?" as though the meditation itself isn't the end goal.

byonic  ·  2750 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Moral Machine

I feel like this drew incorrect conclusions from my decisions.

My line of thinking went:

- Protect the greatest number of human lives (no judgement on age, sex, moral character, profession).

- If number of lives lost is equal between pedestrians and riders, the riders have assumed the risk of driving and should be the ones to die.

- If I'm going to kill pedestrians to save lives and the groups are equal, and the choice is between swerving and going straight I'll go straight, something about making the decision to swerve feels wrong to me.

However my stats indicated that I want to kill women and the elderly, which I hope I don't have to mention is not the case at all. Probably just chance based on the scenarios I was given, but I hope that doesn't become the conclusion!

I keep missing you on IRC dude! Our schedules seem to have gotten out of sync lately, probably mostly mine.

Mail me on here if you want to talk things through in depth!

Is there a significance to the onion, or do you just like the design?

Sorry, this comment is private.

My understanding is that they don't have to pay them anything at all, so there wouldn't be any reason to go through the gymnastics of giving and immediately taking away most of a higher wage.

byonic  ·  2794 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What do you think of Dr Jill Stein and The Green Party?

Homeopathy was removed from the platform and replaced with an explicit commendation of alternative medicine.

While I respect the party's mistrust of the pharmaceutical industry, I'm wary of those who would recommend 'alternative' medicine to anyone as a viable treatment.

I'm absolutely skeptical of the industry as well, but I at least trust it to act in its own self interest and find a way to grow their profits wherever possible. If it were proven that alternative medicines were effective treatment, I'm pretty confident the pharmaceutical industry would themselves turn around and find a way to profit from them.

byonic  ·  2829 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Green Party's Jill Stein invites Bernie Sanders to take over ticket

Sorry to perform necromancy here, but do you think it's within the realm of possibility that Kansas would swing?

I remember during the caucus there was a very strong anti-Trump atmosphere among Kansans, do you think that has faded?

I ask because as much of a bad taste it leaves in my mouth I feel I should vote for the lesser evil if it's at all possible that she can win. If my vote's not going to matter, however, I'd like to vote for the candidate that's closer to my own ideals.

What do you think?

Thanks for your input!

Also, thanks for the reminder that my little bubble isn't always representative of the state as a whole, always good to get an outside perspective!

It's something I think I should do more often. This reflection was really good for me to do, I found it reassuring that I'm at least moving in the right direction.
