Idealistically I will be doing fieldwork in endangered languages, cataloging them before their extinction so cultural and linguistic heritage isn't lost to globalization. That's the idea with a Linguistics degree, but it would take a lot of effort and luck. Either that or doing diplomatic work, anything but staying in the country. Realistically if I stay on the path with Linguistics I will be lucky to land an adjunct professorship at a university. I'll most likely change paths to something more profitable, or do something completely unrelated to my field where I have connections. Especially with decreases in scientific funding this is seeming more likely everyday.
There's something to be said about the social aspect of going outside and smoking. A shared shame does wonders for overcoming social barriers, and the nicotine takes the edge off. It gives you an excuse to leave a situation, to talk to people, to 'accidentally' run into someone on your way down to smoke. I've been smoking for two years now, and although I plan to quit in the near future, I've met a few people who would turn out to be good friends huddled around a corner trying to light a cigarette.
Othermusic is right down the street from me! Their brick and mortar store is great for hard to find releases.
Thanks for this. I love Ott so this is great.
I second hypem. There are too many music blogs to keep track of, and hype machine let's me follow music that might be blowing up across all of the blogs I follow as well as songs I'd otherwise miss.
I'm in university now, so most of my music discovery is going to live shows and talking with my friends, but I used to be really into using the internet to find my music. My first stop was always either r/futurebeats or r/indiewok, but the turnover rate (especially with r/indiewok) wasn't fast enough for me. I started following youtube channels that showcased the type of music I liked: majestic casual and versimilitude mostly. Once I had a good list of artists I liked, I would visit their record labels' sites to check for new music from other producers on the label. For me this was mostly: Alpha Pup, Ghostly, and Ninja Tune, as well as wedidit. I also started following producer blogs like ISO50 a.k.a Tycho for further music discovery, as well as blogs about the genre like The Purple Bay. It's really about jumping from link to link that you find on websites.
The worst I'm willing to divulge? I was young (17) and foolish with my first girlfriend. She was very shy and a bit prudish, but for the few months we had been dating I had opened her up from never having kissed a boy to much more. But still no sex, which I was becoming less fine with as time went on. For summer vacation I convinced my parents to let her come along, and stay with me in our own room. This was it, I thought, it's finally going to happen. First night we come back from dinner, where we had a few glasses of wine, and things were getting pretty heavy. She finally says "I think I'm ready", and I immediately jump up and run to the bathroom to get ready. Everything's set and I'm fully in 'go mode', got her clothes off as fast as my shaky teenage boy hands could, and what do I find? Blood, blood everywhere. Apparently her period had come a day early. I distinctly remember every part of what came next, whether I'd like to or not. My hormone soaked brain went into overdrive. "Hey, it's no so bad, we can just clean up and keep going." She turned to me and said "Oh fuck, I'm so sorry, I can't handle the blood." Always the strategist, I tried to think of the ways to not stay a virgin for the rest of my high school career. "Well, what if we ... if I, well I have some lube here, if I ... used the other hole instead?" As quickly as the words left my lips I realized what I had done. I had asked this girl, on her first time ever, for anal. She just gave me this blank stare, as if I had killed her dog. I ended up sleeping in my parents room that night, and even though we ended up having sex later there was no end to the shit I received for that.
Nice, I found out about and became a fan when he was on tour with XXYYXX, especially after this collab. Slow Magic opened for them.
It's such a shame about what happened to Telefon Tel Aviv though.
I love Knxwledge. He made a surprise appearance at Afropunk in Brooklyn and I ate it up.
If you like Nujabes and Ninja Tune I also suggest checking out Shigeto
Edit:
More less well-known chill music producers (who all happen to be Asian): Bahwee
Beat Culture (A bit of nepotism as I went to primary school with him)
Giraffage
Saw Shlomo last year, great live set.
Toro Y Moi - So Many Details A little bit on the poppy end of what I usually listen to, but I love it for calming down.
I was on Reddit for 4 years and went through 3 accounts. After the digg migration I moved deep into the subreddits. The problem with that is they either die from lack of attention or are invaded from the front page through an /r/bestof post. I like the way you can tag a post here without having to create a subreddit around it, so a super specific category doesn't get lost in a sea of cats and youtube videos.
Delicate Steve - Don't Get Stuck (Proud Elephants) For fans of Ratatat and Popeye.
Steven Pinker has done wonders for popularizing language and mind studies, even if I don't entirely agree with him. It's kind of rare to find linguists with any ounce of showmanship so this is a breath of fresh air. http://www.ted.com/talks/steven_pinker_on_language_and_thoug...
First year at NYU studying Linguistics and Anthropology. I love the program here, but the people can be somewhat hit or miss.
