It's definitely an empty gesture, complete with banning a few rude but innocuous left-wing subs so they can say they're just neutrally enforcing the rules. Still, the_donald going from untouchable to getting banned as an empty gesture says something about the context beyond reddit.

I've heard from a lot of people who were inspired by Seattle in 1999 to get involved in politics, enough that I'm convinced Occupy wouldn't have happened if Seattle hadn't happened first, and silly as it got at points none of the new waves of activism in the last 10 years would have happened without Occupy. It's not about the Nikes, even if it was about the Nikes for the kid stealing them. It's about showing that capitalism isn't invincible, that it's not hopeless. I thought that kind of symbolic gesture was counterproductive for a long time, because it seemed like more people read it the way you did than didn't, but 2020 looks a lot less hopeless to me than 2010 did, and a lot of the people making it that way were dumb kids posting riot porn in 2010.

Palmer Luckey isn't the original anything, the VPL guys were, and in their defense they were mostly earnest hippies hanging out with Timothy Leary. Virtual Reality is probably much more impressive combined with LSD.

Palmer Luckey read the The Virtual Reality Homebrewer's Handbook in the age of kickstarter. His achievement was reanimating a dead horse.

Unfortunately the states that should be wondering whether right to work laws were really a good idea are instead worrying about getting a haircut.

Every time I look at the pricing on higher end Apple kit I think someone really needs to try being SGI again. Gamers aren't going to be subsidizing wintel forever, between phones and games targeting every platform so there's not much of an advantage in a gaming PC over a console since the games are built around console limitations. Build a nice RISC architecture with good video and audio built in, port linux or FreeBSD to it and pay cad/audio/video vendors and Wolfram to port their applications, make sure it speaks Vulkan, and have a relatively cheap nerd toy offering to ensure the free software ecosystem will get ported to it. You'd own the big data space too because no one who still has to care about their CPU architecture likes x86.

Previews and posts seem to speak different markdown dialects.

    for d in */

renders the \ in preview (so displays \/), but interprets it as escaping the * when displaying the post (so displays */), while

    for d in /

displays */ in preview, but interprets the * as markup in the post.

Unless they've gotten much better since I was looking into electric cars, it doesn't seem like driving for Uber with an electric car would be viable. You'd spend too much time charging your car and not getting paid. It might be viable for a more conventional taxi service, because you could have a more cars than drivers and let drivers swap cars when the one they were driving needs to charge.

Immigration.

The Millennial generation continues to grow as young immigrants expand its ranks. Boomers – whose generation was defined by the boom in U.S. births following World War II – are aging and their numbers shrinking in size as the number of deaths among them exceeds the number of older immigrants arriving in the country.

There isn't a chosen one this time around. That's the problem; the big donors want anyone but Sanders or Warren, but none of the other options are compelling and with Trump being an incumbent they need turnout. Personally, I think Biden will say something stupid or sniff too many heads and they'll start trying to hype Buttchug's Prairie Home Companion act next.

The song is about feeling ambivalent about being German, and the video uses recognizably bad periods of German history with a romantic personification of Germany running throughout. And the personification of Germany is a black woman. I don't think they're walking or quacking like a duck here. Hanzel und Gretyl were definitely in on the joke.

Blood Axis doesn't just walk like a duck and quack like a duck, they wave a neon sign. Michael Moynihan was just 20 years too early to be Richard Spencer.
