Rejuvenation  ·  2445 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Looking for good English-language sources of Indian news.

Hi Devac, Thanks for asking..

You can refer The Indian Express, Livemint to get idea on economy, these papers are centrist in opinion..i.e. more pro development as I think, so these support labour reforms, more FDI..et al.

whereas, when you want to know about what left leaning people think.. you can refer The HIndu.. in this paper opinions are largely against Genetically modified crops, land acquisition from farmers etc.

And majority of population read The Times of India, but for quality you can refer above sources..

Hope it helps.

Yes, it does, but I think results of Yoga are gradual. Cardio, for me shows quick results, once I reduce some weight, will go for yoga, as it will be easier to practice it then..

PS: Yoga in our culture and true meaning, is beyond mere exercise, being a technique of controlling body and mind, it symbolizes efforts to free oneself from bonds of our body and nature.

Wasn't feeling good for some time, didn't give attention to fitness and hence, gained weight, once you loose a good habit, it is very difficult forming it again, 4 months ago I was enjoying everything without sugar and my diet compliance was perfect and got an awesome BMI, but then took things easy..left the gym and hence the weight gain..

But, now have hit the gym again, the feeling you have after you perspire is awesome..Thus feeling better and more confident.. but still not able to control diet.

Yoga is the tradition in India, but I find it difficult to control breath and the likewise, so for the time being focussing on cardio, then if my strength permits will incorporate Yoga for mental wellbeing.

Took a break from my busy and hectic lifestyle, walked freely, looked around, shopped, looking forward to watch some movies, feeling so relaxed this weekend..

PS: Can anyone recommend a really good and MEANINGFUL movie? Something natural to lighten up my mood, I don't want to see romance, no sci-fi, just something natural..and beautiful.

1. No, I don't believe in any plan. I believe in action and through it we can build our future.

2. May be due to sudden change in belief in stopped meditating, but meditation can be done without need of believing in God, such as focussing on breath, Yoga, and it has benefits mental and physical.

4. Thanks for letting me know about #talkreligion, i would love to be part of that :)

5. You have very nicely quoted Sartre,Thanks for that.

Reminds me Nietzsche; "That which does not kill us makes us stronger." and “The Obstacle Is The Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials Into Triumph” by Ryan Holiday, summarized as it is our choice on how to act.

6. You have well questioned me on whether without God world will be selfish, in short you have questioned my faith on Humanity,Thanks, so I partially take back my words back, and quoting Gandhi here:

"You must not lose faith in humanity. Humanity is an ocean; if a few drops of the ocean are dirty, the ocean does not become dirty."

And Atheists can be wonderful people too=> Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawkings.

So, for minority fear of God will be required, and for major section I uphold morality of Humanity.

Rejuvenation  ·  2626 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Pubski: January 18, 2017

Some personal unexplained situation came in my life,i was having immense faith, but due to disastrous end result, you may say i am sounding like having grudge against The Superior being.

But after considering the viewpoints of many rational persons, and analysing my self that, look, if God was there, he would have prevented some of the most painful and inhumane conditions which some people do suffer, but no!

Now what I believe is in yes there is some sort of energy, which helps when we pray deeply ,may be in form of waves, but no superior being as such. At the end I acknowledge power of institution of a human being over anything else.

And honestly telling I was much happier earlier, when i meditated and it helped me getting stress free and optimistic. So if some one is believer, it will be good for him to remain so.

Now that sort of divinity gone out of my life, it has become somewhat lustre less, but reality is always non glamorous, no? And hard to accept in contrast to beautiful world of fantasy.

My personal opinion is all moral values in religions are worth abiding, and at least, the name of God is necessary to enforce conformity to those values.

But,painfully some people on earth are killing their fellow beings(who are obvious) in the name of God(who is not obvious).

Rejuvenation  ·  2626 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Pubski: January 18, 2017

So,this year I have suddenly turned atheist, earlier was a staunch believer and now believe in none of the religions ( born as a hindu though). Now for me Humanity and Science are God,and I believe in myself first and what is visible, rather than some non visible superior force.

But in my life earlier i think i had some occasions of premonitions and telepathy( like i was thinking of some friend and she suddenly responded), which i believe can be explained by science.

And I hate rituals like hell now.

Rejuvenation  ·  2628 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: World's eight richest people have same wealth as poorest 50%

To compete globally it has to be input intensive and highly automated, agreed. Yes, this will increase productivity and increase income of farmers. But, ain't automation take away jobs in labour surplus countries like India and China( These are the countries of absolute poverty,um, not so sure about China though)? But, as you are referring to US ( Here relative poverty exists) where involvement went down from 70% to 4%,as it transitioned towards manufacturing and finally towards service sector driven economy.

By, agricultural based industries I was thinking to utilise Village based industries model as propounded by Gandhi, in a labour surplus, job deficient country.

But,here, in my opinion, you are referring towards Lewis model for Economic development of shifting surplus labour from agriculture (where marginal productivity is almost zero) towards manufacturing sector.

You are probably right, India almost skipped manufacturing sector in terms of contribution towards GDP and jumped directly from Agrarian to service Service sector based economy( Which prefers white collar skilled jobs and hence the inequality),and hence we have our story of jobless growth!

But with regard to China I can't get the scene, they initially worked very well for increasing agriculture productivity, then under Deng Xiaoping went under transformation towards manufacturing( mostly low value added) , but still poverty and inequality exists there, may be population problem.

WIth respect to directly protecting the workers, yes i do feel that liberalisation has resulted in more and more informalisation of economy, and lesser social security measures to workers. But, the current mood of the governments across the world seems to be labour reforms making it pro business.

Directly protecting workers may be helpful in US, in India we have to expand manufacturing and business for job creation, so the pro business reforms are taking place here.

Okay, let the capital be generated but its redistribution must be effective and government must seriously focus on social sector such as education, health and skilling of workforce.

Rejuvenation  ·  2628 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: World's eight richest people have same wealth as poorest 50%

Neoliberalism has problems particularly when it is not able to produce jobs for masses, and is benefitting skilled middle class. In India about 43% of people are dependent on agriculture for livelihood, and my firm belief is that government must encourage Agriculture related industries with forward and backward linkages,so that people can lift themselves above poverty. But, market forces are not creating the required jobs and manufacturing and services sector which require skilled labour are not able to absorb poor people.

With respect to inequality what i believe is,as said:

“The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent vice of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.”

                                    --Winston Churchill

Guys ,Though OftenBen is right that Yes, Majority of people do condemn it and perpetrators will never be receptive to it..but as oyester is saying that not transforming it in a movement has some kind of passive bystander effect..

.We need a sustained campaign to pressurise at least the political class in believing that the matter is serious( which in my opinion does not act in absence of such movements),and make and implement pro women policies..=> So, giving voice to the belief, is necessary to show how much "NUMBER" of people are furious due to such acts.

Secondly..it will embolden women to not tolerate such incidents and come out with complaints..this can prevent further victimisation of other girls..So,here OftenBen is also right..sometimes what we lack is also 'SheforShe '. Campaign..as until it doesn't impact one, people have tendency to keep such issues under carpet..

The name of the campaign is misguiding to some extent..because we need support of all people, men+ women ,who stand against it..

But keeping in mind the fact that rape though is a gender neutral crime, victimises women mostly and till recently the women rights campaign was largely driven by women( I think so)=>That's why the need of name=> 'HeForShe'.

Thirdly, though it will not shut up completely some misogynists who are often caught in victim blaming..but will dilute their voices to some extent?

At the end it is not about teaching men about something, rather it is show of their support to a cause.

That's all what I believe.

Preventing sexual assault when victim is known or related to perpetrator, in my opinion can be done by:

1. Reporting such cases, most of the cases go unreported and thus further such assaults by making perpetrators fearless, encouraging women to report such cases, as it is a serious offence.

2. Roping in men, in condemning such assaults=>He for She Campaign

3. Educating people morally over someone's right over their bodies

4. Reducing the growing trend of objectification and commodification

Rejuvenation  ·  2631 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Pubski: January 11, 2016

You are absolutely right about repeat and habitual offenders.. Letting them go makes victim more vulnerable on the first hand and makes society a less safe place on the other..

There must be strict monitoring of such people after they have served their terms.

Other measures I can think of are:

1. More police patrolling in sensitive areas

2. Making registering of police report victim friendly and encouraging women not to cover the cases rather to come out and file complaint

3. More women in police

4. Registered and verified drivers in public transport, women specific vehicles

5.Martial arts training to women

6.More role of men in condemning violence against women..e.g. He for She campaign

7. Making sexual assaults cases gender neutral..cases pertaining to male victims must also be heard.

8. Sustained campaign through media..education to respect one's freedom particularly women.

Rejuvenation  ·  2631 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Pubski: January 11, 2016

I do agree that i have to absorb only relevant news, but we,as part of society have a shared Humanity, no? .

And thanks for the concern that I will go crazy, but this is current problem in my country and highlighted by media over recent protests due to a violent crime( victim unrelated to perpetrators..was done by rural to urban migrants), and i believe this is the tip of iceberg and most cases go unreported and case must be worse off in rural areas and suburbs.. Even if itdoesn't impact me... I have every right to feel for people, like the way I do in case of war torn countries..

And one of the biggest mistake that, we often feel that crime happen to others, .. but the truth is we all are prone to certain degree of crime every time..

See, gender subjugation though not in form of violent crimes is present everywhere.. though with varying extent..

And of course,at present I may not be powerful ( For powerful ones economic development seems to be a priority over law and order!, and kind of misogyny which prevails often leads to victim blaming..)enough to make changes..and feeling and raising concern is all I can do!

You are right that such cases are more of type of assertion of authority and control..by someone already known to victims..but some repeat offenders are worse than animals..!

Rejuvenation  ·  2633 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Pubski: January 11, 2016

So this time around I am perturbed by reading news of sexual assault, molestation, rapes and even murder in some cases! I ponder when this dehumanizing crime will stop? Such reduction in value of one's life and personality with no fault of hers, has to be stopped or lets say reduced?

What it needs to be done to fight misogyny, objectification of women?

Well few questions I want to ask:

1. The root causes of such acts=> Lack of political will or lack in enforcement of law or something else?

2. Do these cases relate to people from lower economic groups and education ,or there is no class differentiation?

3. What is condition in west in this regard? ( Yes I am an Orient, living in a world where patriarchy prevails)

4. What needs to be done to stop the wrongdoing?

I was just thinking for women and their right to life, freedom and to live with dignity..

Inviting ideas of hubskians..

Thanks!

Hey Thanks..Speaklt sounds good.Wiki does become creepy sometimes.:D.gonna try it!

Regarding time management..yes I am using Promodoro technique..the problem was probably I was lacking in motivation after burnout I had after studying whole night..That disturbed the entire body clock..and it impacted me for a week! Now getting better!

And making a goal diary is absolute must as rightly pointed out by you!!

It gives a proper execution plan and keeps mind clear off other tasks while being at work for one specific task..

And you are bang on on Physical activity point... for a month I have left the Gym to get more time to study..but sadly it has impacted performance as well!!

I watch self improvement videos and audio summaries of such books on youtube to get me going..

Actually it gets difficult to revise same thing you know over and over again!! But that's necessary for me..So I am looking for some innovative revision techniques..

e.g. in one of the videos I watched it was being suggested to make concise notes first and then convert it to audio form and mix some background sound..and hear it on the loop!!

But I am afraid that whether it will work for me? Anyways will try it for once!

On sleep front... i am the one whose productivity will decrease if wake up before 8 AM...:P and need at least 7-8 Hrs. So..yes! it varies from person to person.

Well I guess my earlier blocked brain is resuming some sharpness..this time wont disturb body clock..and yes will be resuming exercise too!

Thanks!
