This is the kind of person I want to be when I get older. He's not sitting and wasting his time until he dies. He's learning and creating. He's using his spare time to do something with his life. I hope I never be one of those people who "settle down".

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3605 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The preventable, inevitable death

I remember an episode of Scrubs where Dr. Cox was worried about his daughter getting sick. He does the whole overprotective parent thing and takes it way overboard. In the end JD gives him a speech about how he is going to worry more than other parents. He says that he will worry more because he's seen the worst. He knows of every potential horror story. I wish I could find a video of it but Google seems to be failing me.

I think my problem has been the opposite of yours. I remember being about the same age (8-9) when my mortality first struck me. The difference was that I was very ready to die. I was in church and we were talking about heaven. I found myself really wanting to die.

That feeling never left me, I always felt like I was ready to die. When I stopped believing in heaven so much (that's a whole different story) My feeling of wanting to die didn't go away. I've fought with suicidal thoughts throughout much of my life. Every time I got sick or something I would secretly hope that this would be the illness that would do me in.

Fighting that battle has made me pretty numb to death in general. I don't still want to die like I used to but I am ready for it. It's not something that scares me. I know that I am going to stop existing one day. It doesn't really bring up any emotions, at least not any I'm aware of. It's almost like blind acceptance.

Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar . . .: Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes

I found this book sitting on a lonely shelf at my local used bookstore. It seemed like something quirky enough to add to my collection. Three years after reading it I have explored almost every branch of philosophy in depth. I often use it as a reference book on what I want to read about next. Before reading this book I thought of philosophy as too big of a subject to take on, something that I would love to learn but didn't know where to start. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to start learning about philosophy.

It was pretty funny also...

So many people coming to see what the fuss is all about. I don't think there's too much to worry about though. There were quite a few comments saying how much they preferred Reddit or what they didn't like about Hubski. I'm not all sure that Hubski has any appeal to the average "default user" or Reddit. Sure there might be a few extra members but I don't see the place getting overrun any time soon.

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3850 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Ask Hubski: What Was The Last Thing You Made? (Fresh Blood Edition!)

I'm not sure how to put a cool picture in the comments like everyone else.

This is the last thing I made. It says "Old, but I'm not that old. Young, but I'm not that bold" In Elian Script.

Neography/Graphology is a bit of a hobby of mine. I'm always on the lookout for new ways of writing.

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3851 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What will eventually cause Reddit to lose its popularity?

I've already been reading more than I ever had without Hubski. I think with Reddit, other time wasting content was too readily available. I unsubbed from pretty much all of the defaults but I still wasn't getting all out of Reddit that I should. I think the main difference now is that Hubski gives me a reason to want to spend twenty minutes reading through an article.

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3849 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Obligatory Influx Opinions Post

I still thing it's wrong to join any community before spending some time lurking. I spent a good week or so reading through Hubski posts before I did anything "real" with it. I did the same when I joined Reddit or any other community I've been a part of. I'll even do it when I find a new subreddit that I like.

I think it's important to understand the community that you want to become part of. You have to test the water to make sure you actually like it. If you do like it, you like it for what it is. Jumping in and disturbing the water will change the nature of the community that you wanted to become part of.

I remember joining after that r/tor post. I really wished I had put the time into Hubski that I'm putting into it now. I'm really enjoying this place.

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3851 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What will eventually cause Reddit to lose its popularity?

I don't mind pics as long as there's something to them. The thing I like about Hubski is that if someone posts a picture they usually follow it up with something that leads to a real conversation.

That is something I would love to see. It'd be better to see the traffic starting a week before today leading up to a week or two from today. That way we could see the extent of the traffic spike and how much it dies down.

I had a big Disturbed phase back in high school. They were terrible live. It kinda put me off from the whole experience.

Make Me a Bird by Elektrik People has been on repeat for the past few weeks.

Ghost Towns by Radical Face is another one I've been enjoying lately.

Das Me by Brooke CandyI think that one explains itself.

Edit: I'm not exactly sure how to link things here...

Double Edit: Thank you bfv

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3862 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: So, what do you guys do around here?

I made my Hubski account awhile ago when it was first mentioned on Reddit. I never put too much time into it. I figured I could get the same experience over there as I can here.

Lately, I've been getting back into Hubski. I've been lurking a lot for the past few days trying to get the feel of things here. I didn't want to be one of those guys who joins a community without knowing about it first.

I'm still trying to get the hang of things. It's weird following people, it kinda makes me feel like a stalker.

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3609 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Books that have shaken your perspective

Aaaand, now Less Than Zero is near the top of my wish list (right behind Neuromancer). I think that is just the type of reading I need to help me with what I'm going through right now.

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3704 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Lurker roll call

I'm still around but I'm mostly a lurker. I just don't have the time I wish I had. I really love Hubski and wish I had the time to become an active member here but you know how that goes. Most of my internet time I do have goes into maintaining stuff on Reddit. I still come here when I feel like sitting down for a good read.

I've been getting really into My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. I found them while looking up Sneaker Pimps, I'm really digging the sounds.

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3839 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Plato's Republic: The Philosopher-Kings and Hubski

I think posts like these are what shows us the true power of the internet.

There have been hundreds of political experiments throughout the years, all of them trying to answer one thing; what is the best way to live?

Every single one of them has failed. None of them were able to devise a perfect way of governing people. The internet gives us the power to try out thousands of these systems at lightning speed. Every website is it's own country trying out and testing it's own political system. With each new system, more flaws are exposed. With every flaw that becomes exposed, there comes a group of people trying to solve it. This has been going on throughout the entire history of mankind except that it has been tremendously slow. The internet speeds up interaction allowing for flaws to be exposed/fixed faster than ever before.

We may never devise a perfect system of ruling, but the internet sure makes it easy to see what works.

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3840 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are you reading now? Is it any good?

I'm one of those people who read more than one book at a time.

Currently, I'm reading The Definitive Book of Handwriting Analysis because handwriting fascinates me, as well as Dying to Win: The Strategic Logic of Suicide Terrorism because suicide and terrorism are also fascinating.

The first one is pretty cool, I've been using it to help me understand/develop different ways of writing in Elian Script, something I am deeply fond of. Elian script emphasizes creativity and expression in developing your own unique version of the script. Studying graphology helps me figure out what I want my writing to portray.

The second book is really just more of a filler. I'm not as passionate about suicide terrorism as I am about writing. It has been pretty informative though, it certainly makes a lot of what's happening in the Middle East make more sense.

I channeled my focus. I could feel the energy running through me. Master always told me to let go, give in to the power.

I can't. I'm not going to let it control me. I will break it. It will be mine.

I cringe as the surge begins to take hold. I clench my fists and bite down. I can feel myself slipping. My palms are bleed as my nails dig deep into my palms. I feel my teeth begin to crack under the pressure.

I slam my fists into the ground. "NO!" I shout. I push back as hard as I can.

I feel the energy shake. It's scared, I smirk and push harder. It breaks.

I did it. I'm in charge now. Master runs into my room, breaking his vow. It's a sin to disturb a monk while he's meditating. He's angry, he could feel the energy as it died.

I don't care. It's mine now. I look up at the sky and laugh. Lightning surges around me.

"This is going to be a fun night" I chuckle to myself as I walk away from the burning monastery.

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3849 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Contemporary jazz from the Middle East

I really like listening to music in a foreign language, especially when I can't understand any of the words.

I want to hear the pure sound of the music without being weighed down by it's interpretation. Later on, if I liked the song, I'll look up the lyrics and make sure the person isn't saying something dreadful.

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3851 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What will eventually cause Reddit to lose its popularity?

Has there been any lasting effect? Has the site changed much since the last mention?

I'm really interested in all of this.

They were really good live. They had a great stage presence. They were friendly and had conversations with the audience in between sets. I would highly recomend seeing them if you get the chance.

ProtrudedDemand  ·  3862 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: So, what do you guys do around here?

I've gotten a lot of that community feel from Reddit. There are even a few people that I talk to outside of Reddit now. I guess it depends on which subreddits you subscribed yo and how often you commented.

I like your college/bar comparison. I think there's a lot of truth in it. Reddit is definitely like a university. You could hang out in the cafeteria (the defaults) all day. You would be surrounded by people who probably share the same interests as you but you have to be extremely loud to stand out.

The university also has small clubs and groups. If you hang out there, you're probably going to make some real friends.

Hubski would be the quiet bar that people come to when they want a break from all of the noise. I think you described the feel perfectly.

I could use a quiet drink as much as the next guy. I think I'm going to be spending a lot of time here.

Good answer. I'm just wondering because I think asking things like that is a good way to get to know people on sites like this.

Hey there Mindwolf. I have an honest question.

I like this article. It agrees with me.

What made you share it?
