OftenBen  ·  580 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Ethereum blockchain slashes energy use with 'Merge' software upgrade

This is my ETH rig, there are many like it but this one is mine.

For about the last two years I've ran a small at home ETH mine that wound up totaling around 1.0 gh/s after all my expansions and maxing out my fuse box. Yesterday there were no PC fans spinning in my house for the first time ever since I bought it.

I had a good chunk of ETH saved up until my furnace broke in January and needed almost full replacement. As it stands, after cashing out a big chunk near the ATH price to pay for the furnace, I am just under breakeven.

AMA I guess?

I'm pretty earnestly looking into staking. I'm not going anywhere, my hoard isn't going anywhere, unforeseen financial trauma notwithstanding. Seems like the smart move for someone interested in the long term of ETH. Someone can feel free to tell me I'm wrong. Mainly in the crypto space these days I just DCA into BTC and ETH and try to listen to everything that insomniasexx has ever been a part of.

I will forever bear a deep regret that I made a choice to NOT covertly take (Steal) money from my parents to invest in bitcoin when it was pennies per. Maybe not being in such deep poverty might have helped my family. Then again, my parents may have just seen it as further evidence of liberal education defiling my right wing soul.

I will have both the resources AND the knowledge to capitalize on them when the next such opportunity presents itself, if it does.

Now to figure out the best way to get rid of all this extra hardware. Gave two of my closest friends $600 GPU upgrades over the winter, built a PC for one of my little brothers who actually wants to have something like a relationship with me. Have another scrap rig 3/4 of the way built, either for someone close at a deep discount or facebook marketplace at a fair market rate.

Neurology says I do not have classically presenting epilepsy. Just idiopathic seizure like episodes.

But im also getting a brain MRI for thoroughness so maybe that will at least let us rule out a brain tumor or structural deformity.

I miss being a contributing member of society really badly. Hosting Friday night dinners for the quaranteam, something people I care about can look forward to helps a bit.

I wish I had a use for my problem solving and analytical skills that are right now essentially wasted on super fine tuning my PCs and finding scifi/fantasy series I haven't read yet.

I was looking for a visual reference for a tabletop roleplaying game that I am organizing and acting as dungeon master for. I've always found the visual styles of Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhism appealing and a character in this game I'm playing follows something akin to that kind of faith.

I learned that there are both the standard, immobile prayer wheels that I'm used to seeing, like this.

As well as a handheld version that looks like this.

That's super real.

My fiancee graduated in December of last year and has been working roughly full time since then. She has espoused similar feelings in the recent weeks.

I experienced much the same for a long time. When we first graduate college and enter the workforce it really does seem like that work and the necessary actions to maintain one's ability to work are all that there is time for.

With a good degree of work and intention, you can create time for yourself and your loved ones in your schedule. Whenever I hear 'I can't, I'm busy' what I'm really hearing is 'I can't, I won't make time for you.

Social hobbies are the best way to make adult friends. If you have an active one, even better. If you are an adult without a physically active hobby or pasttime, get one before you regret not getting one.

Your life from now on is exactly what you make of it. Every year composed of months, weeks, days and hours. How you live is how you will have lived.

bfv is gone.

This is hardly news if you're under the age of 30.

Tiktok is simply Vine but operated by the chinese government as a tool to collect Intel and shape public opinion.

If you are trying to get (young)people to use your app in this day in age you want it to be obvious that all of the hottest most interesting and influential people on social media are using your app. You accomplish this by curating the content of the app and its advertising.

I will try and find the article that talks about how a bunch of content creators were approached to join Tik Tok, specifically because they are physically attractive and have large pre-existing social media followings.

Go try and make a Tik Tok video about Hong Kong and see where it goes.

Americas Christian's are directly to blame for the fact that basic public health information and policies have been turned into political debate.

This problem has been going on at least as far back as the Scopes trial.

The church I grew up in put out a statement that they trust God to keep them safe and they will be taking exactly 0 precautions regarding Covid-19.

This can be dismissed as my regular tirade against people of faith. Forget the fact that their actions will directly lead to infections of more people. I'm just a meany who was bored in church as a kid and hated going.

OftenBen  ·  1782 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Enticing Sin of Empathy: How Satan corrupts through compassion

People of devout Christian faith often have a different definition of the word 'Love' than the average person.

Your average person would not consider it loving to tell someone that they are corrupt, evil, damned or an abomination for having a same-sex attraction. It is a loving, Christian thing to do to help make sure that people don't end up in Hell. In this example, that means making sure that LGBT+ people are reminded that they are unclean and unwelcome in the eyes of God as they are.

But I'm just a sad, hate-filled, burned up former fundie, what do I know.

SUBHEADINGS

Cardiac Rehab

Had a nice consult/intake appointment with exercise physiology. Apparently I've been absolutely mauling myself with exercise for no reason. I am supposed to be doing just enough to elevate my heart rate without making me feel super shitty. Apparently it's not a good habit to exercise to the point of agony. Huh.

Food

Summer produce rawks. If you're not taking advantage already you are sorely missing out. My latest craze is taking all the stuff I would normally throw on a sheet pan and grilling it instead. An example from the other night -

Grilled Miso Veggies

-Multi-color carrots, cut right down the middle, like so. I leave the tops on cuz it looks pretty.

-1 Large Sweet Onion, cut into roughly 2cm tall rings

-1 Large Eggplant, cut into spears or disks or oblongs. Either way, salt it heavily and give it a minimum of 30 min on a plate covered in paper towel to drain before you do anything else it. I hated eggplant because I never prepped it properly before cooking.

-Zucchini or Summer Squash to taste, cut into spears

-White/blonde miso 3-4 tablespoons, other miso works, I like this stuff for veggies because it's tangy and umami and a little bitter almost without being musky like darker miso can be.

-Sesame oil, 2 teaspoons ish Don't use too much

-Olive oil or other neutral ish oil 3-4 tablespoons. Sometimes you need a bit more, that's fine.

-Kosher salt, to taste, heavy on the eggplant for nasty liquid extraction purposes

-Black pepper, to taste

-Garlic powder, to taste, maybe 2-3 teaspoons

SUB-SUBHEADING - INSTRUCTIONS

1. Chop your veggies starting with the eggplant (And salting the eggplant! Both sides!)

2. Mix all non veggie ingredients in a small bowl. It should form a loose paste/liquid mix. The oil and miso likely won't fully combine and that's totally fine.

3. Preheat the grill, medium high, keep it under 450 degrees freedom units

4. Apply miso/oil/spice mixture to veggies. I carefully put the sliced onions at the bottom of a big mixing bowl then put everything else on top. After dumping the miso/oil mix onto the veg I usually just use my hands and mix everything very gently, trying to keep things in the same shape they were to start with. You could also sit there with a brush and do each cut piece individually.

4. Grill veggies to taste. I check on them about every 2-3 minutes and flip them a few times gently. Usually leave the sections of onion ring alone as much as possible and flip them only once to maintain integrity.

5. Eat!

I've also chopped this all up into smaller pieces and tossed it with green veggies, rice wine vinegar and the remaining oil/miso into a super delicious salad. Other variations would include like ginger, mustard powder or cumin into the spices, and apply this to literally every vegetable that is sturdy enough to make it to the grill.

News from Cleveland Clinic -

First and foremost, no transplant yet. The numbers just aren't there. Whatever is going on is complicated and poorly understood. It's believed that some amount of my chest pain is not directly originating from my heart - the current guess is micro-hypertrophied skeletal muscle in the chest wall.

Second, there is a pharmacological issue. There are several different manufacturers for the drug that I was taking, one that is known to produce quality drug with known filling agents that do not interact with the drug metabolism. I not only didn't have the good manufacturer, I had the literal worst one. This manufacturer buys drugs, equipment and filling agents cheap from India, pakistan, and several other places not known for their quality pharmaceuticals. Because of this problem, it's possible that the medication I was taking is either the incorrect drug, the incorrect dosing of the correct drug, or else contains filling agents that interact with the drug metabolism, or some combination of these issues. The doctor confiscated my bad drugs and sent them out for testing.

I've been switched to a different dosing of a different beta blocker from a manufacturer that doesn't cut corners, and batch-tests every lot of drug that is produced. Took my first dose monday evening and I can already tell it's not the right choice. My fatigue is through the roof and I'm dizzy just sitting in this chair. I have a call scheduled for friday to discuss things thankfully.

Third, he wants me off the gabapentin ASAP because it directly interferes with getting me up and active. I have an appointment with a pain management specialist coming up to hopefully begin a wean off that onto something else. No idea what though.

No answers yet, essentially. This new doc found something that he knows he can fix, the drug issue. After we fix that we re-evaluate and try again.

I read an interesting perspective on the Kavanaugh case this morning.

Kavanaugh is not on trial. He is being interviewed for a job.

If this was any other job in law, he would be disqualified immediately.
