2010: Odyssey Two Goes into a little detail as to what may be at the center of Jupiter. Clarke surmised that it my be a gigantic diamond. Is it true? We don't really know. It is very hot, possibly as high as 56,000 K, and very dense. The central core pressure is estimated to be 100 million times the atmospheric pressure at the earth's surface. It is expected from a variety of planet formation scenarios that the planet has a rocky core of about 10-15 times the mass of the Earth, but on top of this is a seething 'ocean' of metallic hydrogen and other exotic states of hydrogen and helium, its chief constituents. Whether the central rocky core is in the form of a 'diamond' or not is not something that could be easily anticipated from the mathematical modeling of the planet's interior. In other words, Arthur's guess is as good as anyone!
Here is the link to the paper on it. Also, here is LHC's blog entry on it.
lmao
That was in fact the headline of the article.
Has anyone read the book? Clark and Kubrick Worked on it together while the film was being made. You notice several inconsistencies. For instance, Clark wanted it to be about Saturn but Kubrick went for Jupiter. In the end Clark ended up agreeing and wrote 2010 with Jupiter instead of Saturn. Is there anyone who watched the movie but did not read the book understand the ending? I didn't understand it until I read the book and it's the same with all my friends.
No worries about using me as an example. People try to make an example out of me all the time... :D

"Quantum" is the new "smurf".
Regretfully, I have not seen the movie. This weekend has not been good for me time wise. I have a copy and am planning on seeing. Hopefully I will have time tonight.
Wish I could but the Michigan Skeptics Get Together is that night. I will be in Plymouth doing a presentation on the history of skepticism.
It really depends on the technology. It will last until the NSA finds a way to crack it. They will probably be able to crack this the same way that bittottent was cracked. By inserting nodes into the network that recorded the data going through. Get enough nodes under your control, then you can potentially piece together whole conversations. It is a difficult and costly process. It's a cat and mouse game. The same one that happened in WWII. Bletchley Park cracks the Enigma. Germany adds another rotor. Bletchley cracks that. Make it complex enough, you can buy yourself some time.
Good job! I'm taking my wife on a hike this afternoon through some trails managed by the city. Very beautiful and a great workout.
AA doesn't release numbers on success/failure rates. They don't release anything, actually.
It's still incredibly early in the work. They don't even have a prototype yet. It will be a few years in research still. But you are right it is very promising. Our main problem is energy storage. Once we can bring down that cost, it will solve a great many issues.
Voting for a voting method. How meta.
It has always use conspiracy theories as one of their most core values. Now that the fake Wakefield study was retracted, they say it was "big pharma" doing it. They say all kinds of nonsense. Everything from "it's just big pharma trying to suck more money out of us" to "It's mind control".
The treaty has no problems with US sovereignty. There is absolutely zero enforcement in the treaty. It's entire purpose is to encourage giving people with disabilities equal rights.
I had this wonderful, well thought out reply with pictures, references and deep thinking points to consider. When I hit the reply button, I lost it to a bad gateway error. It is now lost. Unfortunately that reply used up most the the brain power allotment for today. I will try to re-create it later on today perhaps.
I sent the guy an email and invited him out to be a guest for Michigan Skeptics. I hope he accepts. This would be wonderful to hear him talk about. Plus I just want to post the picture on my site :)
