How odd. You've made an account to spread the word about a convoluted site concerning Bob Dylan?

I pretty much feel the same. The whole debacle was predictable from the first wave of posts. Even if voat was open and ready, the effect it would have had on Reddit would have been absolutely trivial.

I approve of the name! From a completely impersonal, unbiased standpoint - trust me :D

Most of Reddit knows about voat - there were multiple frontpage posts about it. So, if voat was open, the migration (however short it may have lasted) would have probably been much more visible.

There was also a very popular thread about alternatives, as well as an entire subreddit for it (/r/redditalternatives) - Redditors really had no need to google it. So I don't think search trends are a very accurate estimate of how many would have left in the right circumstances.

Makes sense, though I'm pretty new - I'd love to hear an experienced user/admin's thoughts.

Float  ·  3217 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Reddit has done it again

People were angry because they felt Reddit had betrayed their whole 'free speech' philosophy. Reddit's a place where people can make a community about anything, as long as it's legal. So, when their legal subreddit about hating fat people got banned, they cried out about censorship, hypocrisy, and lies.

From my understanding, the admins' justification as to why they banned /r/fatpeoplehate was that its users were actively harassing other subreddits and communities - and they were banning behavior, not ideas or free speech. Some people didn't accept that, and still believed it was straight censorship. Others believed that banning an entire subreddit for the actions of a few users was wrong. It just keeps going from there.

Ultimately, Reddit can do whatever they want, including bending their own rules and philosophies - but they'll anger the community doing so, understandably. Many were okay with the whole deal because /r/fatpeoplehate is widely considered to be a cesspool. But a lot of people weren't okay with it, regardless of their opinion on the specific subreddits involved.

Float  ·  3217 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: PSA: Welcome to Hubski, Redditors.

More like people who don't feel the need to put up with the kind of bullshit you're spewing.

Agreed. Posting on Reddit often feels pointless and unsatisfying. If you rarely get upvoted, you feel like you might as well not be posting at all. What's to enjoy about making posts that feel like they're not liked or even seen? That's why karma feels good. It's validation that, hey, my posts aren't pointless! Someone is enjoying them! I should keep doing it!

On Hubski, though, the max visible amount is 8. That was off-putting at first, but it's great for promoting discussion in a non-intimidating and continuously satisfying way. This is because comments tend to get dots if they add to the discussion in any way.

So, to put this in other words...

Rather than the occasional:

Cool, my post got 50 upvotes. It's nothing compared to the thousand-upvote posts up there, but hey, it's something.

You get a consistent:

My last few posts are half-wheel! And that one even got a full wheel! Awesome.

No one will read your comment if it's long, and if you aren't fast enough, someone else will have replied and then no one will see your comment.

That's another problem I see with Reddit. There's an extra meta-game you have to play if you want yourself heard, that really shouldn't exist. Discussion should be just that: discussion. Not a bunch of flaming hoops you have to jump through, at just the right time, in just the right way.

Pretty much. It's definitely not the best place for reasonable discussion and I believe it does influence its users; at least slightly.

After four years of reddit, I get a bit of 'culture' shock on smaller sites like Hubski because of the variety of ideas being thrown around. People here have tendencies, but those tendencies are not overbearing or all-consuming. Hubski and similar sites aren't an echo chamber or hivemind like Reddit often is. There's no downvoting, so controversial posts and viewpoints going against the grain aren't silenced and crammed to the bottom of the barrel. They're nestled among the others like they should be. I really like that.

As for getting angry/defensive at people who disagree with me...I think that's more to do with my own personality, and, honestly, human nature - than Reddit's influence.

Float  ·  3217 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What upcoming video games are you looking forward to?

Black Desert, Wildstar F2P, and Fallout 4. I've been getting that MMO itch, but there's really nothing decent out there that I haven't already played to hell. ArcheAge was fantastic until the economy crashed because of new introductions to the cash shop.

Black Desert is another Korean MMO coming out with some of the same sandbox features ArcheAge had, and the combat looks great. Fingers crossed for that one.

I've registered #hubski on Rizon (irc.rizon.net). Rizon is fairly popular, it's up there with the most used networks - a good candidate. I currently have ownership, but will hand over the reigns to the appropriate people if you decide to use it.

What modes do you play in ARMA 3? I've always just played wasteland and the like - never joined a unit or anything.

Played Town of Salem over a year ago for about a week straight. Some roles were incredibly fun to play. Making a scheme and dropping subtle hints to mold other players' perception of you, frame an innocent townsperson, or get someone to use their ability at the perfect time for your interests. Really great experience.

That "oh shit" feeling when ten living townspeople turns into three, after a single night. Hanging someone on a tiny whim and, bam, he turned out to be the serial killer. Piles of irony in that game.

I've got a huge soft spot for Life is Strange. It has its flaws, of course, but it's charming as hell - a real sit down and chill out kind of game. The soundtrack put me on a road to some fresh new music, too, and I've really been enjoying that.

Played RuneScape for a few years myself, but it never really grabbed hold of me (thankfully, in retrospect). I've known a few people who got sucked into the same loop as you. Best of luck, friend - I hope things end up working out for ya.

Dunno, "superficial dunces" seems pretty derogatory.

Float  ·  3218 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Windows 10

I've been running Windows 10 Preview Builds for a few months now. Besides a few issues like the start button not working (fixed that easily) and problems with nVidia drivers, it's been pretty nice. I'm a sucker for dark themes and Windows 10 comes with one by default.

Get to the IRC if you want to live!

You don't want to know what happens when Hubski goes down. Above all else, you must remember not to stare at the 502 Page for more than three seconds. Your life could depend on it.

Float  ·  3219 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Where are you?

Hey there, I'm a new user too. Getting the hang of it, I'd like to think. :)

I live in Florida, USA, have for most of my life. Currently snacking at 3AM in my new apartment, as is tradition. Finished unpacking and breaking my spine recently - just moved due to some family issues. Things are looking up, though.

Also, Belarus! Interesting. Haven't met anyone from there before. What brought you to London?

I hear this whole thing started because of disastrous AMA with Jesse Jackson.

That was a small event that lead into, but didn't necessarily cause, the firing of the admin, Victoria. Which was the straw the broke the camel's back for reddit users, because it effectively put /r/iAmA at a standstill in her absence. This cascaded and released a bunch of tension between mods->admins and users->admins. People are tired of admin negligence and shady practices.

Kind of a WW1 Franz Ferdinand type deal.

Float  ·  3219 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Reddit has done it again

Honestly, Hubski has a little bit of the easily digestible media.

Guess I haven't stuck around long enough to see that much of it, then. I guess what I'm saying is, though I enjoy discussion, I also enjoy content that doesn't necessarily create good discussion. Making Hubski a half-replacement. Which I don't really mind - it's got a certain charm :)

If only being a bum on the internet paid bills . . .

One can only dream. You and me both!

People find worth and substance in different things. It doesn't make them lesser than you.

Float  ·  3219 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Reddit has done it again

As a redditor of 4 years, I've wanted a new site to frequent for a while. Each time something like this happens, it brings that desire to the foreground.

The default Reddit experience can be draining... simply tiring. The drama, annoying trends, jokes driven into the ground, predictable comments - there's just a pile of petty gripes that eventually make a mark. Sure, you could just subscribe to the smaller subreddits and unsubscribe from the big ones - but that didn't really work for me. I enjoy many aspects of the "/r/all" experience - it's an incredible amount of content streaming in from all directions. Crowds of people to interact with. And for the most part, it's nice - until those little issues rear their ugly heads and start to pile up again.

People tell me that the problems I have with reddit have less to do with reddit, and moreso to do with the internet itself; that any large community on such a site would end up having the same issues, because people are people. Well, I'm not so sure. I'd love a new site to dig into - I think one could do the job - but there aren't many alternatives worth even a mention right now.

Voat is a dissapointing silhouette with less features and (currently) a lot of downtime, understandably so.

Hubski is great, but only as a side visit for me right now - it's missing many aspects a redditor would expect. Not that this is a bad thing. It's just that Hubski's different - it won't be what many redditors are looking for in a replacement site. The lack of individually managed subreddits, differences in upvote philosophy, and the lack of easily digestable image and video content (due to the heavily discussion-based nature of the site) all factor into that.

Many of us just want a change of pace from the monotony. Something fresh, if only for a little while. Personally, I think I'll continue to visit Hubski to satisfy the discussion side. But I'm at a loss for the other side: easily digestable media.
