I'm wondering if I should order 1000 N95 masks from Alibaba for ~ 1500€.

I feel like the nurses and kind of everybody would need it in Paris. But I don't know if such a small order would help in any way.

Is that crazy ? To try to do that on an individual basis ? Might be too late.

Doing a 2-day bizhackaton on the blockchain. I'm learning a bit about all this.

“Per @TreyYingst, Bannon, Mike Dubke, Sarah Sanders and Spicer walked into cabinet room just now. They did not look happy.”

“Can now hear yelling coming from room where officials are.”

“Sarah H. Sanders told reporters she didn’t know anything about yelling.”

“WH comms staffers just put the TVs on super loud after we could hear yelling coming from room w/ Bannon, Spicer, Sanders”

Creativity  ·  2544 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Macron is the new French President.

It was foreseeable: the polls indicated between 24 and 25%, and you could feel that France was divided between voting against Le Pen or not voting at all.

I mean, according to a poll post-election, 43% voted for Macron to block Le Pen. They do not adhere to his project. It's good news in the sense that we do not have Le Pen. Project-wise, it all depends where you stands. I believe there are some good ideas in his projects, as there are bad ones. I didn't vote for him in the first round but did in the second.

That's why the legislative election that will take place in a month will be really important to see if there is going to be any change.

Fun tidbits about Macron :

- he's 39 years old (youngest of the G20) ;

- was unknown three years ago ;

- was an investment banker at Rothschild for 2 years ;

- married his teacher who is 25 years older than him.

That's awesome. Enjoy!

I'm following the story very closely. My grandparents and my cousin are there for the holidays. They are safe. That's where I spend a lot of summers when I was young.

It's fucking crazy. 13 november in Paris, now this in Nice. (& other similar events in other countries). I don't see that kind of event ending anytime soon and I don't see any solutions to that happening. Makes me mad how powerless we are against that kind of violence.

It's amazing how the mind works.

I read "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" a year ago and it was a really great book, I recommend it to everyone. I found it amazing how such a spirit could pursue a wide variety of interest (physics, music, drawings, lock-picking...).

I must also share these two essays by Feynman :

It has been quite a week.

I went to see Hans Zimmer at the Palais des Congrès and it was an amazing performance. Probably one of the best experience of my life. The Orchestra played Gladiator, The Lion King, Pirates of Caribbean, Inception, Interstellar, Batman and more and you felt everything. I recommend it to anyone. Here are some excerpts, but it's orders of magnitude better live :

I have some interviews coming this friday and next week for 6-months internships in Private Equity, Management Consulting and M&A. It's going to be quite hard but I'm going to prepare and we will see how it goes.

I went to see a conference of Jean-Yves Le Gall (CEO-equivalent of the CNES (Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales) -equivalent of the NASA here) and it was quite interesting:

- Fun facts: it seems that the main reason the ISS stays up in the air is because we don't know how to bring it back to Earth. (the size of this thing is crazy: length 78.8m (239ft) ; width 108.5m (356ft) ; height 20m (66ft))

- Google X works on a live Google Earth, I didn't know this. It could have tremendous application, especially for self-driving cars if the network knows in advance where are moving things and in which directions.

- Jeff Bezos really knows his science, he was able to talk at a rocket-science level for 2 straight hours with specialists and journalist at a conference 2 weeks ago.

- There was a dinner between Obama, Hollande, Elon Musk, Jean-Yves Le Gall and others. During the dinner, when Jean-Yves asked Musk about a possible collaboration, Musk told him that if he wanted to collaborate he would have to set up an appointment with Human Resources at SpaceX. Typical Musk.

- Ariane 6 is going to be completely new and have a cost effective approach, trying to respond to market needs (3D printing of parts, reusability, etc.)

- Concerning SpaceX, his group of experts told him that the design of the rocket wasn't going to work and was going to explode at high altitude due to fluctuation. That didn't happen. They also told him that the first stage would just go through the barge, sinking both the first stage and the barge. That didn't happen either. So now they take new entrants way more seriously.

Transcript:

Hello Hubski, it’s Creativity and thenewgreen asked me if I wanted to do a Meethubski so, here it goes. I just want to say before it that I’m coming from France and that I’ve never been in an English speaking country for more than 2 weeks before, so I hope that I’m going to sound ok and that you’re going to understand me.

I’m going to discover the first question with you: what is your happiest memory from childhood?

Well… uh. It’s a difficult one. My happiest memory from childhood would be I think playing with my brother. We had little figurines, which was like 10 cms tall, figurines from Spiderman, Superman and all those movies and we had like 50, 100 of them and we would play with them like all afternoon long. It was… well… I’ve never been connected to my brother more than at that time and it was really great just playing with him all afternoon. He is 4 years older than me. And, yeah, we were care-free, we didn’t thought about life we were just playing and having fun all day and it was a really great time.

So the second question is: who are some hubskiers you enjoy following and why?

Well, since I joined Hubski more than a year ago, I followed like 20/30 people I don’t remember exactly and the list pretty much stayed the same and I was more on following tags that I like. But some hubskiers that I particularly enjoy the comments and posts. The first one I guess would be Kleinbl00 because, well, whether it’s a post or a comment, he’s always argumentative and he’s always like explaining in depth his opinion and he gives a wide perspective of things and tries to go in depth about his ideas and opinions and I really like that about him.

I also really enjoy following [?] like lil’s dating life or thenewgreen music. It’s just I think it’s more than individuals, it’s like the community that is really great by just sharing our life together and sharing ideas and opinions and our works. It’s just like an organic… an organic internet society that’s really great because everyone is here for supporting each other and being here for each other. That’s what I really like about Hubski.

The final question is: what is your message?

Well, my message to the Hubski community would be to use more of critical thinking. Like for example in everyday life we tend to rely on experts and known authoritative figures to tell us truths and we don’t enough try to understand things on a deeper level. Like for example at school, the people around there learn things by hearths but they do not try to push the boundaries and to understand how things goes and relates to each other on a deeper level. So basically is yeah, use critical thinking in everyday life and especially on subjects that interest you. Like for example instead of reading an article about artificial intelligence try to read a book or something like that and… yeah. That’s it. Thanks for listening Hubski.

Creativity  ·  3113 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are your favorite television series and why?

The Wire : best overall serie, the characters and the story really goes in-depth

Treme : amazing serie about New Orleans and it's cultural importance : jazz, mardi gras, food, community, how people try to get together after Katrina ruined the place

Black Mirror (UK) : short-serie, independant episodes, about our relation to technology and how we might interact with it giving new possibilities. Makes you think

True Detective : great serie, screenwriting, camerawork and amazing actors

Utopia (UK) : another great short-serie, about climate change, conspiracy theory, does the end justify the means ? Amazing soundtrack too

Breaking Bad : great serie over the span of 5 seasons.

Cosmos, A Spacetime Odyssey : about science, space, humans and our history

Deadwood : see bhrgunatha comment, I agree with him, it's an awesome serie

Louie : a sitcom from the comedian Louis C.K. It makes you think about different issues on life and is pretty funny.

Planet Earth : a documentary about our planet. Stunning images.

Firefly : a short amazing sci-fi serie

The Corner : a mini-serie (six episodes) which depicts the lives of drug addicts in Baltimore. From the same director of The Wire, it's based on a real story and is truly touching and humane.

Game of Thrones : great fantasy story.

Archer : a sitcom with animated characters. It's really funny.

House of Cards : great political story with amazing actors.

Luther : It's a mini-serie, you really feel for the main characters. It's a great short story

Sherlock : Also a mini-serie, great independant episodes.

Creativity  ·  3209 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Denmark produces 140 per cent of its electricity needs through wind power.

That's amazing.

But as good as it sounds, it's not as easily replicable in another country. Denmark's population is 5.6 millions while, for example, UK is 64.1 millions. Which means UK people would need 11.5 times the wind power of Denmark to be self-sustainable.

We don't understand what "electricity needs" refers to. Is it energy consumption by households ? Is it energy consumption by households and companies ? Does it includes transport (cars, planes, freight, train), heating and cooling, food, manufacturing ?

For example, the UK can't only live on renewables (this book is really great and go in-depth about our energy consumption/production http://www.withouthotair.com/ and explains it).

Creativity  ·  3348 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Why digital natives prefer reading in print.

It's weird to compare Internet readings to print readings.

The study should be done between e-books tablets such as the Kindle, Nook, Kobo and print version of a book.

As for myself, I like both. I tend to prefer e-books because I find it more convenient. I can get the definition of a word I don't understand, I can highligh paragraphs easily, the battery is amazing and in the long term, it's cost-efficient.

Creativity  ·  3636 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: I recorded myself telling a story

As I have never encountered death of someone even remotely close to me, I wouldn't know how I would react to such an event. But in any case, I think I would read and re-read this passage to myself and share it to those touched by the tragedy :

Epicurus - Letter to Menoeceus (http://classics.mit.edu/Epicurus/menoec.html)

"Accustom yourself to believe that death is nothing to us, for good and evil imply awareness, and death is the privation of all awareness; therefore a right understanding that death is nothing to us makes the mortality of life enjoyable, not by adding to life an unlimited time, but by taking away the yearning after immortality. For life has no terror; for those who thoroughly apprehend that there are no terrors for them in ceasing to live. Foolish, therefore, is the person who says that he fears death, not because it will pain when it comes, but because it pains in the prospect. Whatever causes no annoyance when it is present, causes only a groundless pain in the expectation.

Death, therefore, the most awful of evils, is nothing to us, seeing that, when we are, death is not come, and, when death is come, we are not. It is nothing, then, either to the living or to the dead, for with the living it is not and the dead exist no longer. But in the world, at one time people shun death as the greatest of all evils, and at another time choose it as a respite from the evils in life. The wise person does not deprecate life nor does he fear the cessation of life. The thought of life is no offense to him, nor is the cessation of life regarded as an evil. And even as people choose of food not merely and simply the larger portion, but the more pleasant, so the wise seek to enjoy the time which is most pleasant and not merely that which is longest."

About the implication of death (leaving the mother with the little one), it's just really, really hard.

If you plan on recording other stories, I would like to see if you can implement a transcript. As a non-native english speaker, it would let me check if I understand everything correctly.
