Seeing a lot of East and West Coasters, anyone else here from Chicago or the Midwest like me?

Captain_Ozone  ·  4100 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Mini Hubski meetup

Anywhere in particular on the North Side? I go to school in Chicago, can't drink beer though.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4102 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What would happen if North Korea launched a missile at the United States?

I think its going to be the continuation of Korean war, the second that the missile is determined to land in American territory, South Korea, or Japan, salvos will be launched by either three of those countries, which will lead to a quick peace treaty.

I think a country like China, if they would publicly ally themselves with N. Korea, wouldn't put troops on the ground but would supply N. Korea with weapons, etc. while facing heavy sanctions from the EU. Russia wont ally themselves with N. Korea, but they will sell guns to them without any NATO trouble.

I wouldn't say unit would be world war III in terms of battles, but either a proxy war (if the US isn't directly hit) or a continuation of the Korean war in which the US throws its full military support behind.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4106 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Can internet activism turn into a real political movement?

I think the Internet is different because not everyone has access to a studio and a satellite dish, or print and deliver enough newspaper across across a country as well as a government could. But most people have access to a phone, laptop or just an old dial up connection.

But unlike other mediums, the Internet is directly traceable. If a rebel is posting to twitter, Facebook, or some other social website, anyone can trace it, not only to the person who posted it, but to people who "liked it", shared it, and retweeted it and potentially giving up the position of sympathesizers to a rebel cause.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk8x3V-sUgU&feature=yout...

I found this video a while back and I think has some valid points to internet democracy and that it is a double edge sword. If the internet can spread democracy, it can be used to quell it as well.

I wonder why they limited it only to mathematics? Are there other free publishers out there for the areas?

I cant imagine what the publishers reciprocation might be.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4109 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Where Were You On 9/11?

I was 7 as well, and all I can remember from school is the teacher closing the blinds and us not being able to go out for recess. When went home and wanted to watch Ed Edd and Eddie all I saw was the footage on repeat on literally every channel.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4109 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski Chicagoland Gathering?

Yeah, ill be 19 in a few hours and I was going to bring a friend cause she is really into jazz. I live next to Saint Charles, so I'd thought it be cool to listen to some music and relax. I can check with the pub, if you have a phone number or email.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4109 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Cable Companies: Monopolies That Stifle Competition And Innovation

How come anti-monopoly laws do not apply to these companies? Obviously they are price gouging their own customers in their respective regions, as evidenced by your example. How sub-par and expensive must a service be in order to get government regulators on it?

Captain_Ozone  ·  4109 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: TNG Podcast: Space -put to Video

Do you think you will ever revisit any topics down the line? Obviously there is enough content to have different podcasts for a while, but it might be interesting to see how views have changed if anything major takes place (If something is found on Mars, etc.).

And if you need someone to contribute, im up for it.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4109 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski Chicagoland Gathering?

I might be able to go, seeing as I have Monday off. Is the pub 21+ or can anyone get in?

Captain_Ozone  ·  4122 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Hubski Podcast -Anyone have any ideas for topics or a desire to participate?

Yeah I like the vibe that sound and music play. And the mosaic formats reminds of a NPR program, I can't remember the name however. The sounds quality is pretty great when compared to other startup podcasts. Can't wait to participate.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4122 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: The Hubski Podcast -Anyone have any ideas for topics or a desire to participate?

Topics: Sports, Animals, Architecture, Computers, The Brain

I would have no complaints in participating if you need a panelist.

The only thing that I would critique/ am confused about is, it doesn't sound like every is having the conversation at the same time, it sounds like there are separate conversations spliced together (which maybe the best solution due to everyone's schedule).

Captain_Ozone  ·  4124 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Girl's house destroyed after hundreds crash "YOLO" birthday party

Well, I think there is the belief that "It'll never happen to me" that affects people's decision process. How often do you hear about 100's of people showing up and trashing a birthday party of. 15 year old? Although the police calling should have warned her, the insurance not covering it seems like a low blow.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4124 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Hubski Update: Tags are dead. Long live tags.

Not to add more to the workload, but maybe we could a have weekly "spotlight" on users who contribute/share/comment the most for a designated time, or use it for new users as a way to quickly find topics and users. The problem is it might create "celebrity users" which might make it harder for those lower on the totem pole to gain followers (but that isn't the point of hubski, is it?).

Captain_Ozone  ·  4125 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Are Schools Killing Creativity?

Going in that direction a little more, how do we change what seems a world wide view of the education that places the hard sciences at the top, then the humanities, and then the arts. How does the world incorporate an artist as it would a scientist? This isn't to make the professions necessarily equal (that's a different discussion), but to encourage (or even mandate) participation in the arts is necessary for a more culturally literate and successful education system.

Was this test anything to do with a 502 error? I was unable to view the site about 40 minutes ago.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4129 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Do We Still Need Libraries?

Maybe there needs to be a shift in how libraries operate? While having a physical copy is nice, I think a move to digitize at least a portion of the library, namely magazines and videos would help. It would be cool if I could log in to my local library using my library card and pick a book, magazine or video to borrow and have it auto-return. I know Amazon has implemented a system like this already this summer. Libraries could even offer in building e-readers with the entire library downloaded for browsing.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4129 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are your top 5 books?

I'm also really interested in sci-fi ever since reading Fahrenheit 451 by Bradbury. I've wanted to read Isaac Asimov and more sci-fi for some time but have never gotten around to it.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4129 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are your top 5 books?

Sure. The book starts with a little girl in Norway during the 1980's. She lives with her mother and her father is in the UN away. One day she receives a letter containing questions and a philosophy reading from a person who calls himself Alberto Knox. They correspond for a while, Sophie learns about philosophy, when she receives a postcard saying happy birthday to someone else with the same birthday called Hilde. SPOILERS AHEAD

SPOILERS Alberto and Sophie meet, then Aberto tells Sophie that she is only a character in a book, entitled Sophie's World, on philosophy that is a birthday present. The viewpoint then switches the Hilde, who is reading about Sophie as Sophie figures out that she is a character in a book. Sophie then tries to break out, eventually becoming a spirit, unable to interact with Hilde and the real world. SPOILERS

Essentially, you're reading a book about a person reading a book about a person reading books about philosophy.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4129 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What are your top 5 books?

I read and enjoyed The Big Short a lot. His explanations along with real life stories he attacts to it make understanding the technical stuff easy while allowing me to connect with the people in the book.

The Hemingway book you mentioned, is it anything like A Farewell to Arms? I was really interested in Hemingway for a time but forgot about him.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4129 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Experiment: What's YOUR most controversial opinion, Hubski?

I would take that a step further. I believe that most people who are mentally retarded/ severely disabled and that cannot serve a function (such as research) should be euthanized, as I see them a drain on limited resources. I honestly don't see how the advantages outweigh the disadvantages.

I've worked in a retirement home, and the condition that some of the residents are in it seems cruel to leave them like that. I also feel that the people who advocate against euthanasia are just in denial that will happen to them, and a cure will come along and save them.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4130 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What Makes You Happy?

Being in transition. Whether that be on a train from home to school, driving on the weekend, or just being on the toilet. The feeling that I get when I know I can do nothing with that time and it doesn't matter, its a really good release from all the responsibilities.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4130 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Highlighting the original poster's username in the comments

Maybe an option to highlight the names of people you follow with the ability to change the color of the highlight for different users. Maybe another coloring option for new posts since you last visited? I think it would help sort users you are familiar with and be able to search for new people to follow. It might be a little to overbearing and hard to sort though. But I think a highlighting feature would be nice.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4130 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: What is your favorite TED talk?

I think he gives the best talks. I also liked his other talk (I don't think it was a TED) on his reconstruction of a dodo. It inspired me to replicate what his process and just start collecting and compiling images of things that I'm interested in. I've got gigs of images from planes to brains to tablets, it's actually cool to look back and see a timeline of interests.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4130 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Where are/did you going to college?

Psych / Neuroscience freshman at Loyola University Chicago (LUC). The only major draw back is it is mandatory for freshman and sophomores to live on campus, which is incredibly expensive. But the buildings are modernized and the professors helpful.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4131 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: For Poor, Leap to College Often Ends in a Hard Fall

The education debt will be the new economic bubble that bursts. With more and more students take out loans they cant pay back to expensive universities (not to mention for-profit colleges) that they might not graduate from. What also is frightening is there seems to be no way to escape the debt (It stays through bankruptcy).

College in America seems to trapped in the past where only the wealthy could take the chance on their children getting a degree, finding a job within that field that pays well enough. What sucks is a massive overhaul of the higher educational system, if that is possible at all at this point, would cause chaos and divide those who paid and those who didn't pay.

Captain_Ozone  ·  4131 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Interesting Graph from the Wonkblog: Causes of Violent Death by Age

I wonder why that is. If it would be a poor health/living condition, wouldn't euthanasia be ranked in there (it could possibly go under suffocation)? Neurological degradation (Alzheimer's or Parkinson's) I think would make acquiring, holding, and firing a gun very difficult. Does anybody study geriatrics/neurology?
