Thank you thank you thank you!

With each strike of the chisel and hammer the thought that'd come over me was "hmm I'm fulfilling my destiny."

With Apple Towson unionizing, the movement has had a massive boost of forward momentum. I'm in an international discord channel for unionizing efforts at Apple and when the news was announced the chat was ---popping---

Thank you!

I started painting four years ago, and transferred over from the realm of jazz composition (my undergrad is as a jazz bassist). With music, especially jazz, there’s much less of this sense of “stay in your lane” as there is with visual art. This sense of exploration, along with no formal visual art training, has provided me the comfort to feel free to do whatever I want visually.

I just kind of improvised the base design, the stone was asking for it.

I used a file almost all the way through to get them this thin, which took so much time. One disc did break off though near the end :(

BLOB_CASTLE  ·  672 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: First US Apple Store Unionizes

It's actually kind of contentious within the apple union movement that they used the Machinists Union. Most store are talking with the Communication Workers of America, and the long long long term goal is for each store to organize under the same union so we can all eventually exist under the same one together.

BLOB_CASTLE  ·  672 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: First US Apple Store Unionizes

First and foremost, Apple retail is capital R Retail. The product zone sells phones, the backstage team manages inventory, the genius bar team troubleshoots and repairs devices, and the creatives provide instruction on the devices. Many people I work with have been working Apple Retail for more than five years, several are at 10 years+ (I'm personally at three).

3. Retention at Apple is very high because the benefits we currently receive are insane. I work part time to accommodate for the creative endeavors I engage with. As a part time employee I get health, dental, and vision insurance. Not only that, my wife gets them too. Not only that, but you don't even have to be married for your domestic partner to receive benefits. The list of benefits goes on and on. Another benefit that results in retention are stocks. We have a ridiculously amazing employee stock purchase program. In my three part time years I have amassed $15k in Apple stock, including restricted stock units. I'm not leaving this gig anytime soon.

1. A lot more control over the work environment. Apple Retail (and corporate too) is a hierarchical structure, and you have to go waaaaay up the Apple tree to affect change. In our store there are several immunocompromised folks. As retail employees, and even our store leader, had no say in the relaxation of Covid policies as they were handed down from corporate. More control in that sense is one thing we're looking for. Additionally, I'm hoping we can codify the four day work week, just as unions previously instilled the eight hour workday. I don't experience burnout because I work part time. I know my coworkers would be happier if they could also work part time and still receive full time pay and benefits. A lot of what we're looking to do is see how ideal of a gig we can make this, at the world's most profitable company.

2. I'm not sure I understand this question. Are you asking if I'd stay in the union if I ever left my store?

BLOB_CASTLE  ·  916 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Thomas Jefferson statue coming down in New York's City Council chamber : NPR

I read your comment a few days ago, and it's stuck with me. While I agree with some of the comments already posted about how Jefferson's acts are likely beyond anything shameful any of us have done, your general sentiment with cancel culture is one I very much agree with.

Note, I'm now talking about modern day cancel culture about those who are alive and not so much the specific Jefferson situation.

"There currently no room for growth for the living in this culture."

I like this line you wrote a lot. When a person is cancelled today, they're tossed to the garbage, left to either rot or figure out their growth on their own. I could certainly imagine an idealized version of our culture where when a person is called out on their past infractions, their community comes together to re-educate this person, to help them dissect any childhood experiences or traumas that would have shaped them to be a person who's behavior would result in the harming of others. Either this or some sort of center where a person could go to learn. The premise of these ideas is essentially that any group/culture/society is only as strong as its weakest link, so why not focus repertory energy on those in need of the most assistance?

Often when a person is cancelled, it's done so in a public way in which the person being cancelled doesn't have the ability to offer their perspective, or even to apologize/address all those that are now aware of a person's past mistakes. I was recently talking with a friend about this, she is a self identified Christian and practices her faith. She proposed a theory that cancel culture could be exacerbated by the decline of Christianity. She was saying that Christianity places a strong importance on forgiveness, and as the decline of this tradition increases in the US, more people get cancelled. I'm aware this talking point brings up a whole separate can of worms (let it be known I do not identify as Christian and broke ties with those grows after growing up in a Souther Baptist church) but the main point here is that people are finding it easier to extend an accusatory finger instead of a helping hand.

Great question! Also I very much appreciate your openness to state that you consume shrooms. I love magic mushrooms and really believe our modern American culture could undergo a lot of healing through the respectful ingestion of the fungus.

As with most indigenous groups of the world, the Mayans had their own local variety of mushrooms they'd consume to travel elsewhere (intentionally leaving this wording vague).

something like chemically-induced geometric associations that drove that style of art

I'm no scientist, but from my robust personal experience with psychedelics, there do seem to be parallel experiences based on the substance consumed. For example with DMT, all of my experiences, and those I've facilitated for others, do involve the "elf" entities so many people describe as part of their experience. It would not surprise me in the slightest that your consumption of mushrooms would bring about the specific color and geometric combinations that would allude to the Mayan drawing styles (and probably also Aztec which is similar yet significantly different).

Have you ever checked out the Mayan Codices? There are only four remaining today, but there were once thousands. insert cheeky comment about how the colonizers destroyed these documents in bonfires.

This page gives the slightest bit of context of the four that remain. The page states they were drawn on pages made from fig trees. I have also seen that the leaves of the maguey plant were peeled into thin sheets, dried and turned in to paper. The dude in this video is quite a character, but you can see how he is able to create the paper from the maguey.

Here's a link to where you can see the pages of the Dresden Codex. Your local university library may have a copy of the codices. There's a special collection here at the University of Missouri-Kansas City's library where I was able to view reproductions of the codices in their entirety.

Hopefully this answers your question! I'll send you a message about the print

I'm interested in checking out this article, but it's locked behind a paywall.

most definitely! I was actually planning on creating a limited run of giclée prints.

It'll have to wait until this whole thing passes over though. The print shops are closed and I'm reserving my limited funds for the necessary items, such as food.

Wooo please let me know your thoughts of a deeper listen, I’d love to hear your perspective.

Yeah I’m actually playing most of the instruments, though there’s also a healthy amount of midi instrument manipulation going on.

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

White Trapezoid was built around a recording of a public performence a friend in Mexico City sent me of him playing the hompax (Mayan trumpet) with a friend of his on mouth harp. It was fun to flow along with their grooves.

Muahaha you know about the dialects! That's rad. My dad speaks Yucatec and that's the dialect Adolfo is speaking here.

Thank you for the kind words about my art, I really appreciate it 🙏🏽

Embracing Change has already sold, so I'll have to check with the new owner to see if they're down to have me sell prints. If so I'll prolly do a run of 15 or so and def keep you posted.

I love the vibe of this track!

I'm actually dealing with a bulging disc in my spine right now so playing an instrument is not really something I'd want to engage with right now.

thenewgreen would you want to try to create a collaborative song using this app as opposed to Soundcloud?

I'm sure in the process we'd be able to find some feedback for fogg4444

That's actually relatively surprising, I've always imagined you have an infinite stock pile of guitar or piano tracks waiting to be added to

I'll send you a message with a lil more information

I have friends who needed up going out to the desert, they say there were about 3k people out there. Though because there wasn't an infrastructure of any kind the situation was more challenging than it already inherently is.
