Today - D-Day, stands for the first day of the Allied landing in Normandy, or this case, Dylan-Day.

In 1963, when Dylan recorded this, the cold war was getting colder. The US had just faced down the Russians in the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. The Vietnam War was getting worse. It was a scary time. If any of you had been around then (and the hubski demographic generally was not), you'd remember bomb shelters being built everywhere and kids in school would have air raid drills to prepare them from Soviets' nuclear bomb.

Duck down under your desk and cover your heads.

Dylan got this absolutely right back in 1966. It's worth listening to him sing this while reading the lyrics.
